Is this democracy?
by Praveen Gopinath on Nov 25, 2003 08:50 AM

Very good article, altho' Prem mixed up Pratap and UP kid Ydav. Not a big deal.
How can BCCI and its officials get away? They are all silent when it comes to corruption within the board, but banned Kale without a trial. Are there predefined rules in BCCI or is it upto the board to decide whatever? Aren't there any bylaws the board needs to adhear to? This should be grounds for PIL. There will not be any justice served. Kale is history. It'll take few years to a decade, may be, before the judgement is delivered. More and Roy will get away so will H'bad and UP selectors. We have seen it all. History repeats.

What bothers me a lot is media gave coverage to Salman Khan's accident episode so much, but now, media is doing not doing anything to exert pressure on the bunch of jokers.

These guys eat and live public's money. Is this all media could muster to bring these crooks to light? Media certainly needs to take its share of blame.

Praveen

bribing of selectors
by amar kalidindi on Nov 25, 2003 08:49 AM

the very nature of the selectors is understood when they suspended abhijit kale without even interrogation.first they said that it was for india 'A' TEAM. and later for seniors team.do the selctors atleast know what teams they are selecting. every person who dreams of being a cricketer for the country knows that it can only happen by money and politics.there should be a thorough investigation into the alleged bribing charges. or else it can be understood that jagmohan dalmiya himself would have bought votes to win the post of bcci president.why haven't he taken the allegations made by vankapratap seriously.he should have suspended the concerned board members who asked for money from kale. it seems like always only the players are made scapegoats.
and one thing that surprised me is that only kapil dev and venkatesh prasad stood in support of kale. what happened to the rest of the players guild and players association? no member of current indian team member is opening his mouth.

We the people...
by Kedar on Nov 25, 2003 08:45 AM

are responsible for the success of yet another game to be made "great game". We have every right to know what the hell is happening with BCCI.I think BCCI should be accountable to the people. By shutting themselves between the 4 walls and refusing to speak to the Press who are the only means of taking information to the people, BCCI is thinks they are the lords of this game. They think the players, people.. everyone are puppets in their hands. I think time has come for change in the way BCCI works and handles things and becomes accountable to the people who are responsible for the riches of BCCI and who are responsible for making a mere game a "great game"

Poacher, gamekeeper, judge, jury, executioner, all in one!
by Dr T S Raman on Nov 25, 2003 08:40 AM

The two persons who accused Kale are "officials" of the BCCI. No investigation was done by the BCCI or _anyone else_, but the BCCI chief judges Kale and passes sentence. The same BCCI executes the sentence. And Panicker's analysis shows that BCCI itself (through its "officials") could have been the poacher. It is also the gamekeeper, judge, jury, and executioner. Marvellous! Now we get a clue why we are losing cricket matches with all the stupendous talent that we have.

Continuation
5)Another thing, You take the example of any corporate company. A manager complains to the HOD that an employee had offered him a bribe for some promotion benefits. Who word would count more? The employee's/the manager's? If it's the employee's word, then why would the other guy be made a manager in the first place? The BCCI has acted as any corporate organization would act. Suspended the employee and launched an enquiry into the matter. It is another matter here that the professionalism of the board is questioned whenever it acts on something.
6)All other matters regarding the selectors being not-so-clean are there. But if the board didn't have faith in the said two persons--- More and Pranab Roy, they wouldn't have appointed them selectors. Maybe Kale thought that these two could also be influenced the old fashioned way and went about it and found out that Indian team selections do not work that way.
7)There's nothing the board could have done after the media gave such an adverse coverage to this event. Don't you think that this just looks like the Rio Ferdinand incident of drug testing recently where he was made into martyr when the FA finally did sth good?

For once Prem, please check the articles on the web/newspapers before writing anything.
1)Pratap did say that he was approached. But he did nothing about it until now. He said that he was sure he would be selected on merit but that hasn't happened. He talked about the selection of Noel David when Kanwaljit Singh should've been selected.
2)A UP under-17 cricketer Ritesh Yadav had said that he was asked to cough up 50,000 rs and on refusing was out of selections. He is the one who seems to have complained to Jagmohan Dalmia. And he is the one who said nothing seems to have happened.
3)The HCA I think is concerned just as you are that Pratap has chosen to air his accusations now instead of when the incident happened.
4)And there's is a bit of thought here... why would two national selectors complain about one cricketer who was not any kind of competition to any of the players going to Australia? not even in the probables? There is one small matter here. The Australian tour will certainly result in some of the batsmen losing their place in the team. Maybe that was where AbhijitKale would have had a chance to come in. May be that was why he tried to bribe them now.

what to do!!??
by ramprasad on Nov 25, 2003 08:07 AM

Wonder why selectors went to complain about bribing when they could have just sat tight?

Anyways, there is no doubt in my mind, even though obviously no body has proof, that BCCI and selectors play favorites and it goes on even in these post-match-fixing period.

I wish there were more eye-opening articles like yours. Its a shame there aren't many (I don't know if they have impact but atleast we will know the facts for a fact). Its's also a shame to not see more from you Prem. Without your articles, Rediff cricket section is pathetic and downright boring.

BCCI stinks
by Ranjit Kommineni on Nov 25, 2003 07:57 AM

It is common knowledge that BCCI is no saint, it was only matter of time before the skeletons came out. Everyone who follows cricket knows that the selectors do indulge in corrupt practices. There have been so many instances when everyone knew that something was amiss.I totally agree with Mr.Prem Panicker that justice cannot be differential.I would like to add that we the people who patronise the game should take this seriously and do something about it.
