Ferrari fiasco
by Kishore B. Punjabi on Aug 26, 2003 12:39 PM

Said Sachin Tendulkar from his new Ferrari,
My dear cricket fans , I am very sorry;
But the fact is I am neither tired nor retired,
And in this country I am most admired.

I play to win every battle and every war,
And I am the games biggest, brightest star;
So it gives me a great deal of pain,
When you paint me as its biggest villain !

Fiat company has gifted me this car for free,
Now even for paying customs duty they agree;
They have shown plenty of guts and grit,
I hope they will continue in the same spirit;

For there is a kar-seva to be done still,
As I drive it over highways and hills;
Every time my car needs a fuel refill,
I hope Fiat will also pay my petrol bills !

Does Sachin deserve the Tax Exemption
by J.Sundara Rajan on Aug 26, 2003 10:12 AM

This is unfair. In India each and every small income group are paying tax and one those can not save their money to get tax exemption are in millions. Whereas Sachin is the one among the top Indian Millionairs, to whom the Govt exempt the Import Duty saying is the small gift? If Indian law is biased one then every body can violate it why not? It is Sachin who in turn should have concluded the issue by paying the duty to show his class even in daily affairs. Does he not have money to pay? Shame.. Shame.. puppy shame..

Laws are for everyone
by sree on Aug 26, 2003 09:06 AM

Sachin is also one of the citizens of India like any others. The laws of India is the same for everyone. Sachin spoiled a great chance to show the gentleman in him and could have become example for others to follow if he had paid the required tax. That is the quality of a real leader or public icon, not just giving momentary enjoyment to the millions, who find solace in the bravery of Sachin.

These things happen due to the perception of high profile people that they have contributed to the country and deserve returns. This is not right. The laws should be above any person and beliefs.

And the people has to follow the law, whether he/she is a common street dweller or demigod.

Imagine this
by saab on Aug 26, 2003 05:24 AM

Lets say Hockey champion thropy man of the series had a Car. Lets not take a ferrai lets take a BMW. Which in itself is no cheap car. Now had Gagan jeet won that car and he was asked to pay the Custom duty, what would most people had said. Just because sachin has money to pay the duty doesnt mean he should pay it. Is BCCI going to pay income tax on the money which indian team won after being second in world cup ? if not then why should sachin pay for the car. its a gift.
