I feel there is no need to increse the IIT from 7 to 12 insted steps should be taken to genrete more jobs for these IITeans in India so we can stop this brain drain. Today most of the IITenss don't stay in India coz they feel there talent will be wasted in India.
I think the opening up of new IITs by the govt of India is a good step in the the arena of technology.
What makes IIT different from other instittes is the infrastructure and the facilities available here. And anyways the students who get in here through JEE are not the only talented students of our nation.Indian students have an intense innate penchant for "intellegence" .Much of talent that is out side the big institute deserves to have better facilities.Definitely the future IITian throng would create a positive brand image for the Indian techies as many more of them would shine on the international front.Another helpful and imperative step would be the reduction in the fees.(Not too much an ask with all the whooping amounts of alumnus donations)We "civilized" people should never ever forget that a majority population of our country still cannot afford the fees. Now please do not talk about the competent banks who provide education loans at nominal charges .Even the loan needs to be returned!!! . Cheers for our nation.Jai Hind
It not the IIT's we need but what we need is institutes which adheres to better quality of education , infrastructure & less of politcs . We need institutes
Which follows to strict schedules as in IIT's Yearly schedule is given a year earlier and NO deviation is allowed from the original one.
We need best Quality of teachers which again needs the govt to invest more in research activities, Stipends of research scholars to be increased so that the cream come for research oriented activities. Today IIT are only known for the Btech who pass out , can I ask why after doing the Btech most of the people leave for states for further studies ?
We need the industries to be more closely related to the educational institutes to research may be more
industry oriented and not only for research purpose.
Still after 50 years of independence we are still dependent on the developed countries for technology .
Can I ask why I need to go MIT for phd and not MIT graduate degree holders come to India for further studies ?

I have graduated this year from IIT Madras in Comp Sc and Engg.I feel there is an everlasting pressure on IITs either to increase there strength or to have more such institutes in the country.Already strength in IITM has been increased by 25% in last four years. The classrooms of first year students have to be flooded with 200 students which are meant for 100 students.Resources like hostels, books in libraries, equipments are not enough for existing strength.
From another end,if we look at the graduates coming out of IIT,things are not as wonderful as they used to be four years back.Today an average IITian finds it difficult to find a job which will fetch him a salary which he aimed for while preparing for JEE.As a result almost 80% of graduates have gone to US for higher studies ..hoping to get the "expected" there. Therefore there is already an "overflow" of talent from the country's talent "bucket".If we still want to fill the bucket and spend from government pocket to feed american economy so that Bill Gates can say IITians are best instead of Madhavan Nair(ISRO chairman) saying that,it is upto the government to decide.
bcoz the limited no. of seats in IITs limits the no. of students who can get better education.
i m a student of final year in MNNIT allahabad .
and i have realised a need of this.
students who come in NITs are really not inferior to those who go in IITs ,but at the time of entrance exam ,it is also a matter of luck.
and those who go in IITs , mostly are those having a gap of at least 2 years after 12th.but those who come in NITs ,generally with no gap or at the most one year.
i tell u one story.
i and my friend prepaired for engg. entarnce exam.
for the first year of preparation i got rank 153and he got 723.
i came here in MOTI LAL NEHRU NATIONAL INST.OF TECH.
But he prepaired for one more year and got admission in IIT roorkee.so wt is better.i doint say that i m .but it is wt happens in most of the cases

an increase in the number of iits is not going to improve things in any way. there will be countless students like u who are still going to be at the end of the list... so won't manage it to the iits... what i mean to say that i am myself an iit graduate.. and 70% of the people who study and excel in the iits are FIRST TIMERS, and they get into iit fresh from college and do well there. thats the thing which happens.. increasing the number of iits wont help anybody in any way. please don't be under the misapprehension that the majority of people in the iits get in there after one or two years of preparation. thats a WRONG NOTION.`
Educational institute of world recognised status is the need of the day and it is essential in view of no. of students passing out 12th std every years. State level institutes are not recognised globally.
Or Central govt should take steps for worldwide recognition of institutes for student exchange which shall contribute to additional foreign exchange revenue.
I am presently studying in IIT Kharagpur and i think no more IITs should be opened as that would certainly
spoil the meaning of what really an IIT is.It will become easily accesible by a lot of students.Excessing of such institutions will ruin its importance not only in India rather abroad too. There are already a lot of seats in IITs and if anyone really wishes and deserves to be in IIT he will certainly be there,no matter how less are the seats.
So i think that the neither the seats should be increased nor more IITs should be opened atleast within coming 5 years.
Being a graduate from one of the institutes which are being considered for an upgrade, I want to say that what we don't (necessarily) need is more IITs.
I have been a visitor to four of the IITs (mostly as a competitor)and I think i have felt the wide chasm betwen the standards of the IITs and the rest of the technical institutes in India. Mainly with respect to the level of infrastructure and the quality of faculty.
While I am sure, more IITs would mean more institutes with great infrastructure, I am not so sure about the level of faculty.
But on the other hand, the concept that the original IITs should not be kept as institutes of undergrad studies and should be channelized only for postgrad and research work is, I think, promising. They have the means and the people and while there has been quality work at the IITs I am sure that there is a potential for more.
