More IITs are absolutely not needed
by Madhur Dixit on Oct 18, 2003 02:39 PM

I have graduated this year from IIT Madras in Comp Sc and Engg.I feel there is an everlasting pressure on IITs either to increase there strength or to have more such institutes in the country.Already strength in IITM has been increased by 25% in last four years. The classrooms of first year students have to be flooded with 200 students which are meant for 100 students.Resources like hostels, books in libraries, equipments are not enough for existing strength.

From another end,if we look at the graduates coming out of IIT,things are not as wonderful as they used to be four years back.Today an average IITian finds it difficult to find a job which will fetch him a salary which he aimed for while preparing for JEE.As a result almost 80% of graduates have gone to US for higher studies ..hoping to get the "expected" there. Therefore there is already an "overflow" of talent from the country's talent "bucket".If we still want to fill the bucket and spend from government pocket to feed american economy so that Bill Gates can say IITians are best instead of Madhavan Nair(ISRO chairman) saying that,it is upto the government to decide.
