Dear Editor What the author forgot is it is India past culture of Joint Family ,,to see hope in despair and live in a way to use frugality to surivive are all the characterstics that have made India to survive even after 1200 years of foreign rule ,we would have not become a country with civil war . We have survived our past with our culture and history ,,our rural india and hardworking middle class kept us moving . The author is a bit out of touch with India . Lots of middle class in towns and rural india forms the majority of India. The show has reprsented all of them, what the author forgets ,there are millions of Indians not inside the stadium ,but outside who are watching the show ,she is in conversation with someone who can afford a ticket and access to the stadium. Iam sure lots of ordinary indians have watched it on TV ,inside a hairdressing saloon,a small house ,a market place. It has made them smile and feel they are part of the show, that is what is important. The show absolutely reprsented Indias strengths ,its past history ,its arts and culture(dances from ap,tamilnadu, kerala, manipur and Yoga etc). Budhas philosphy (Knowkedge tree chakras are the essence of Humans and convey a universal value). Looks like these days ,there is a bit of twiseted intelligence (overflows in the mind) and a kind of balckish to yellow journalism that is taking shape. Freedom of speech does not mean twisted logic and foxy intelligence. ALL indians liked the show
Thanks for the lovely article. I am proud to read about the show that was put up. Keeping aside the whole corruption and negative publicity aside, I am sure the whole world will acknowledge our presence and we may not have to search for an opportunity to show case our talent for the next 100 years atleast.

Indians always wantto ignore the real india(poor slum dwellers and village urchins)who live below poverty line which by the way is more than 70percent of the total 1 billion population. so stop trying to correct a wrong here. its now wonderwhen slumdog released many indianswere upset as it showed the real india. till that 70% come above poverty line then only will it make sense to make a general assumtion about indians being modern

ramesh you still dont get it, as someone else suggested what if a documentary on aboriginals were shown lets say in australia...(well the abrorigines are a minority) and here we are talkin about majority of the population a big difference...!!! by the way a country's progress is judged by judging the basic facilities provided to its citizens one doesnt need a foriegn endorsed view on it. as the hon'ble minister in india put it aptly the standard perception of cleanliness differs from country to country. a foreign player will not look at the glitzy building of cwg alone but alos see a poor woman haluling bricks on her head with a poor child slung on her back that my dear friend is real india so stop imagining all is well just becuase u live in a city and munch on fast food or watch movies in PVR or PRV if im not wrong..

mate your comments does not make sense. What will you say ,if someone came and shot a documentary about Aborginees in Australia and Kings cross and showed it to the whole world. What about the seedy parts of London and poverty there . Please go to china and make a film like Slum Dog Millionaire there and we will see what will happen. Indians never said poverty exists in India ,what they said is display of it and making money and wining awards for the same is unacceptable to Indians and they have voiced the same. Also Poverty in India will be overcome by Indians themselves ,with a grwoth rate of over 8 percent around ,we have created people with wealth who now say will give 10 percent of profits to set up schools for Indian kids . We have also moved a few million out of poverty already. I also want to ask you a question ,we only got independence about 60 odd years ,but before that Britsih and Mughals rules India , acombined period of 1200 years . Do you think 200 years of east india company(British) and 200 more years of British rule ( a total of 400 years ) ,records show that (quote from a british author) that Indias GDP was 18 percent and British was below 2 percent GDP before british came to India. But by the time British left India ,british GDP was 18 percent of the world ,and Indias GDP was reduced below 1 percent. So the answer is ,if british have not exploited indias riches ,in liklihood India would have progressed much faster

ooo thats perfect dude,, rightly said, British, US, OZ are what they are today majorly because Brits were were good conquerors and ofcourse they did invent the Gun. Had we done that earlier, we wouldnt have been in such a situation probably. And we lost ground to the shit mughals who knew nothing other than building Taj, minars, and stuff!!! :)

Having said that, lets not look at the past and we are in a good situation if not a bad one today. The CWG is predicted to raise the GDP by 3 three times i guess, am not that good in economics but i wonder how will the games rise our GDP? is it because of the share buyers confidence in Indian market? please throw some light if some one could. thanks :)

if allk western countries withdraw their investments the so called economy of india and china will crash love them or hate them you cant be successful without the west
I understand you don't like what each and every Indian feels like being proud of opening ceremony.. but yes it has to be indian to feel that way.. dont put stress on your brains to write these article, if you don;t like it just go to sleep
@Rediff: what you want to prove by writing articles like this??
This is what all countries organizing such events do for the opening ceremony. Author has wasted his/her time drawing unnecessary Reconclusions. Rediff, pls grow up!!!! - Naveen
I am not able to understand what she want to tell .....to us .. this is absurd .... our country has shown his powers to all other countries that yes we can do ???? even we should organise olympics , and world cup football . the two strong event in the world .
Re: whts is this article ?
by pradeep m on Oct 05, 2010 08:03 AM
u think entertainment is everything? pls tell me wat did we prove on the opening day than entertainment,
This is a poor article, which is not worth reading and all those who watched the inauguration ceremony will agree with me.
When we Indians become advanced technologically, it doesn't mean we should forget our roots, culture etc. Its good to be modern, but not at the cost of losing our identity...we see a generation decaying right before our eyes, when they embrace the modern western culture..so what is wrong in what was displayed that night??
Learn to appreciate the good works that were in place, the security, the memorable eve we had when our country rose against all odds and negative criticism to host such a wonderful event..
Almost all countries are corrupt..but India being highly populated its felt much and abolishing it is in the hands of us citizens who are so keen to get matters done easily even if it means bribing..so lets vow not to encourage such acts, but at the same time lets learn to appreciate when good things happen.
Grow up Rediff and learn to project the good happenings instead of spreading negative spirit around.

I do agree with you somewhat about needing to be positive, but a country is judged by how it treats the weakest. It is not judged by what others from outside say about it, therefore hosting the cwg matters not. India will not gain the stature or respect it desires, till the poor and destitute start getting treated like human beings, forget about the cwg, it doesent do much for me. If we think a few firecrackers and bright lights in front of the world is something that will take us to the promised land then we are doomed to begin with.

indi man, Going by your standards we should not have developed the nuclear bomb, should've never though about developing a space program, forget about building cars or ships, don't even dream of IT.. you know none of these will help the poor. What say you?
Re: Re: Re: learn to appreciate..

All the things you said we did it for us. If we did this Cwg for us, we would be writing one article or comment about the Indian athletes that live a nightmare of a life but still aspire to do what they love, which is the sport they chose to do not for financial compensation, because they know they wont get it in this country but for thelovee of the game. Instead we worry about the shame that we have been put through in the eyes of the world, how proud we are because of a few firecrackers lighting up the sky and the worlds media clapping hands. Ask yourself this question is it all worth it, when the real athlete that won maybe a bronze or silver for this country goes back home and doesent know how they are going to feed their mother or father, educate their brothers or sisters, how they are going to pay for their health problems etc.. Are we so concerned about what everybody else outside India thinks about what a succesful ceremony this is that we wont mention a word about our own flesh and blood that struggles with life but still is proud to wear the tricoloured uniform.

Sorry pride came before the fall.it should be-happy to wear the tricolored uniformed. now i dont expect a punk like you to understand a word of what I am saying. India is a country with a lot of punks that have lost their self respect. A result of this is what we see today in these message boards. I think the british took the self respect out of us during the colonialism, we have lost our ability to stand up for ourselves and stand up for the weakest that stand with us.
