Well Played MEN IN BLUE
by Dhananjay Dalvi on Mar 09, 2010 12:23 AM  | Hide replies

I am sure, the people must be dissapointed with the performance. But I am happy, there is a improvement in proformance.
There is always a blame on sustem that the system has spoilt our National Hockey. No, its we who is responsible, we as parents never encourage our kids to paly Hockey. Hockey which is our National Sport is facing the same plight like our national Animal "TIGER".
We need ot encourage our kids to start with Hockey, I am sure a person who can play mordern field Hockey can now play any game. We have one good eg. Jonty Rodhes, he played field hockey for South Africa.
Then we need to have lots of Astor turf and the kid should be trained not on natural turf but Astor turf. Thats where the basic would be developed. Its like Sena and MNS shouting for marathi language but the MArathi manus wants his child to study in english school.
Last we won olympic Gold at 1980 Moscow. In between we had losts of ups and downs, we did win the Azlan Shah (Prestigious Tournament) Asian Games, and even Champions Trophy.
Both Pakistan and India we are facing the same reason, encouragement for the sport by citizen and then proper infrastructure.
The anothe big problem is the inconsistent rules. Europeans have manages the federation is such a way that they make rules according tho their convinience. Its like Aus dominaiton is ICC. but now with more Indian in ICC we have increased stake. Thats what is requireds.

from 10th ranking to 7th or 8th spot is definately an improvement. But India needs to win consistently to gain support from mass public. remember we beat paki and paki is at the bottom of the table....they will sure cry foul in a day or 2......or their coach will be murdered like in the cricket world cup.

Amazing game
by sushant suri on Mar 09, 2010 12:18 AM

I think hockey is such an amazing game.Just 70 odd minutes and all the thrill possible. The game changes in no time and there is so much of energy all the time !! This is so much better than cricket where one ends up wasting days together - just to help the advertisers make money.Hockey has no ads and just pure sport.
I really hope this sport can make its comeback in India and become the biggest sport once again!!
Well played India in this world cup. You guys have fought hard in each game. If you keep the same vigor and passion - am sure its not long before you guys are back on the top !!
Best of luck with the next game!

Penalty Corners
by Sukhwinder Singh on Mar 09, 2010 12:08 AM  | Hide replies

In today's match twice Indians couldn't even make a shot on goal as ball was not stopped properly - first by Arjun and then Shivendra. I have not seen Indians make that mistake too often. When ball was stopped instead of Sandeep Diwakar Ram was used.

Those are forgettable. Other matches they didnot do it.
Sandeep Singh,Prabjoth Singh and Deepak Thakur are certainly to be put out of the team. I wonder coach Brasa found captaincy potential in Prabjoth? That means he was considered as a certainity in the team.
Certain deserves for the commonwealth games are Gurbax, Shivendra, Chandi, Vikram Pillai, Arjun, sarwan and GKs.
What the Indian players lack the most is ball control and trapping of ball. These seniors cannot be trained for that. Hence do it at subjunior level and junior level. And aim next junior world cup and not the commonwealth. With the present set of players we can aim only for the Asian level be it Asia cup or Asian Games.
As Rick Charlesworth pointed out total infrastructure and the system of hockey in India is to be revamped.Start Hockey academies in each state and provide Astroturf to each district.
Jai Indian Hockey

Something seriuosly wrong
by Nayan Kumar on Mar 08, 2010 11:58 PM  | Hide replies

In this world cup, I have seen almost all games. I simply liked the games by teams like Australia, England, Spain, Netherlands and Germany. They stick to the basics of game and that is why they win, whereas the Indians repeated the same mistakes again and again. They kept the ball for long time, they didn't play one touch game. Their trapping is pathetic, they missed some lolypop opportunities. The defence was poor. Their man marking was not up to mark. Senior players failed to deliver. This time I saw many sardars, singhs in the team, where are the players from Jharkhand, Orrisa, tamilnadu, Karnataka, maharashtra!! Are they more bad than some singhs who played in this world cup and performed badly. I think something is seriously wrong with selection procedure. But only players are not responsible for debacle. But our system and the preparation itself is not proper. You can create a world cup team in one year. Practice or Preparation match could have been more in last two years. I hope indian hockey will improve.

Gurbaj, Chandi, Sarvanjeet, rajpal etc played well...don't do petty regionalism here...of the non sardars only shivendra and halappa were good.

This is India's best performance in last 4 world cups (7th or 8th). Their best finish was back in 1998 when they finished 9th.

Abhinav Bindra hits out on Sports Ministery
by S Shrikanth on Mar 08, 2010 11:50 PM  | Hide replies

Bindra, the only Olympic Individual Gold Medalist India has ever produced, has lashed out MoS for unnecessarily criticizing the hockey team. He has written very hard that they are trying to discourage the effort put by the hockey team. He says that he fully supports our hockey team and adds that its a good beginning. He also supported coach Brasa for his efforts in changing our hockey style to challenge Europeans in the future.

Time for Prabhjot, Thakur to be thrown out..of the old bunch only arjun halappa did well..maybe tushar khandekar also needs to be shown the door...time to encourage new players like gurbaj, chandi, sarvanjeet etc...time also to find a good penalty corner striker...brassa should be retained for next 5 years.

Cmon all patriotic Indians pllease give other sports attention too. And also ensure that playing other international sports is lucrative and not only cricket which is played by only 8 countries!! Hockey is a great sport so let's cheer the guys as they play mainly for the country as we all know they hardly get great monetary returns.

Let us - readers of this column / board - start a campaign right here to have Jagmohan Dalmiya as the Head of Hockey India. It was his magic touch that transformed Cricket to what it is today [ of course, Kerry Packer did his bit too but poor old man can no longer be with us ].
Otherwise, for those who do not know, allow me to mention that the Bedis, Wadekars & Engineers used to play for a measly Rs.250 per Test match...
I think Mr. Gavaskar will bear testimony to this fact...
