Spectacular Game!
by Martin Scorsese on Jul 05, 2010 09:46 AM

When people predicted and favoured to Argentina and Brazil; a close observer of the games of them would cleanly predict it otherwise. And that is what happened now. While Dutch played a solid game, Germans played a brilliant one. The tactics are nice and they pass the ball quickly among them and see to it that the ball passes the goal post. Spectacular game and a treat to watch Germans play. While Brazil is outdone, Argentina is outclassed. Though the semis are scheduled at midnight IST; we can't miss the sheer pleasure of watching the giants clash.

Do you understand football ?
by Debashish Mitra on Jul 04, 2010 07:06 PM  | Hide replies

All the over hyped names were the biggest flops. Look at names like Ronaldo, Kaka, Messi - they were the biggest flops and had absolutely no contribution. Leave alone contribution - there was no sign of any quality in their performance in this World cup that's the hallmark of a big player.I cannot help but laugh in disbelief at people who after each game vote for these names to be the men of the matches in spite of them doing NOTHING and playing absolutely rubbish. These players are barely visible in a game. They have been corrupted by money and fame offered by the clubs. Only people who do not understand sports in general and football in particular rave them blindly. Football is a team game. What makes a good player is not only his individual skill and ball control but also a sense of opportunity, quick decisions and ball sense w.r.t positions of other player in the game. People who say South American football is poetry and German foot ball is robot like, have surely not touched a football in their lives and do not understand ANYTHING about the game. I admit that traditionally Germans have been a team displaying disciplined and organized passing game rather than individualistic show offs but even in that they were an absolute joy to watch. And NOW look at this German team - they are an example of sheer attacking brilliance and poetry. Watching the young Germans orchestrate an attack or a blitzkrieg of a counter attack is pure bliss, absolute poetry.

... continuing. Look at Messi - for all the hype surrounding him did he ever set up any of his team mates for a good ball leave alone being able to break the defense. The only thing he does is try to dribble in a horizontal line (left or right) withought being able to make any productive forward movement pass the defenders. Ditto for Ronaldo. Many lesser known strikers from the other teams do a vastly more productive job of breaking through the defense and capitalizing on opportunities (ex. Gyan (Ghana), P.K Batang (Ghana)) . I won't even bring Miroslav Klose in the comparison. Every time the ball touched his feet you got a feeling that there will be a goal - such is his striking accumen and sense of blood (read 'chance of goal').

A first goal for Germans seems to be the reason for their superb performance through out the tournament. They played really well for the start and end in both games. They maintained the same Energy and stamina through out the game.

Club vs International Performances
by abhi ganguly on Jul 04, 2010 11:05 AM  | Hide replies

One thing which we are witnessing among these so called great fotballers plying their trade in big clubs is that they are uttuer flop when playing for their national team. You have a long queue of such players Messi, Ronaldo, Eto'o, Drogba, Rooney, Torres, Rossi, Totti, Ribery, Henry and more. The biggest exception is Miroslav Klose.
I think its time that after so many utter rubbish performances, specially the overhyped England team, that Football Associations reshedule the club calander in the WC Year so that players are relieased by clubs 2 months before the tournament begins.

What you comment is exactly true. But you should also admit that league matches , mainly UEFA CL and premier league are more entertaining than the world cup. In fact the names you have mentioned are some of those who made this happen.

It was good to see even Germany's Head Honcho Angela Merkel leading the team from the stands. Her presence was exemplary itself, full of energy. Our leaders & filmi filwallahs can only fly to Dubai or Sharjah at the most evry time, that too to lick the Muslims & Dawood.

Maradona and Messi are too overhyped.
by Cool Mahesh on Jul 04, 2010 10:41 AM  | Hide replies

Maradona is overhyped to be the God of Football for winning just one world cup. Messi is also overhyped without winning a single world cup.
It is the same way in which we Indians overhype Sachin Tendulkar as the God of Cricket without a single World Cup title to his credit.

M.C Mary Kom (Boxing) & Saina Nehwal (Badminton) are todays world class sports persons.
Both of them are winning world championships performing exceedingly well in boxing/badminton which are truly global sports in which level of competition is very high, while cricket has a following in hardly 10 countries. Mary Kom is Four-time World Boxing Champion & is performing well even after becoming mother of 2 children. But who cares in this cricket-crazy nation?? We only like to talk about cricket and bollywood.

neeraj, we had quite a few good bowlers. but we didn't win the WC. also sachin did not took india to final. it was the other 10 who took india to final. also sachin was not world no. 1 for 20 consecutive years. just because he played for 20 years does not mean that he was no. 1 all of that time.
