Indian Hockey

The BIGGEST reason and the ONLY reason is KPS GILL. This guy should be kicked out unceremoniously as he has ensured that we reach the DUMPS. It should be a professional organization or atleast there should be a group of selectors and not ONE joker.

we have not been performing well in hockey for the last 35 years almost.
we have started losing heavily once synthetic turf was introduced .
why we cant introduce back hockey on grass turf.
Atleast there will some tournamnets on Grass which gives a variety in hockey gane and many countries may follow.
And in cricket even if we lose to bangaladesh in first round we give % start treatment paying crores and crores to low ranked players.
We have to encourage our hockey players keeping them him esteem. We must good professional body to oversee hockey preparations avoiding unnecessary politicis. We must declare say 2010 as year of hockey and go towards achieveing a very high level. It is certainly possible to get back the glory of 1920s-1960s

why only hockey? why not football? how can you forget that people stoned cricketers' homes when they lost in the world cup? BCCI marketed cricket well and they have been successful in keeping cricket and cricketers in the limelight. hockey will never be as popular as cricket but football can be. Indians do love soccer, European soccer ie.

Everyone has been concerned about the state of Indian Hockey for some time now. Even the World Regulating Body for Hockey recommended the help of a Foreign expert to bring Hockey back up to a good level in India. However the IHF functionaries (including Carvalho) nixed that proposition. I fail to understand this. If Hockey is in good hands in India then why has the team been wandering in the wilderness for more than forty years now? The accomplishments of the Indian Hockey Team that we point to with pride happened prior to the mids '60s that is before the birth of the current crop of players. Perhaps the main fault with Indian Hockey is that it is in the hands of Bureaucrats that are all non players. We have a number of illustrious players who are all reduced to commenting on the current sad state of affairs. All non players should be purged from the Hockey Federation. But who will do it? The Central Government has now taken the stand that the IHF is an autonomous body. Does this mean that the current officials have a cushy job no matter what?

Stop blaming cricket for hockey fiasco
by Uday Nair on Mar 11, 2008 09:57 PM  | Hide replies

The IHF has themselves to blame for the loss and not the players. Hockey is still a favourite sport in India which many people like, but there is no infrastructure to support that. Cricket has grown big only in the last decade. But criket has been managed well professionally. India is the only cricket team in the world where players are from villagers and small town, not only cities. Even after having film like chak de to promote hockey i think IHF didnt do enough to promote hockey. Wonder what sports minister has to say.... My condolonce to the hockey team. I dont think players need to be blamed.

Let the indian hocky be adopted by BCCI.
by Raj Bhargav on Mar 11, 2008 09:47 PM  | Hide replies

The time has come for BCCI to adopt this hocky, professionalize its approach and get rid of Gill to start again, providing world class facilities or atleast provide the players enough money and means to gain the momentum lost in Gills time.

Boss ,
The mess should be cleared in IHF first , players egoes , coach's attitude too considering Carvallo's refusal to avail the services of Foreign expert.

Without that you cant do anything !!!!

Hocky standard is going down due to following main reason.
1)Non availablility of Astro Turf at gross root level.
2)Poor health & Stamina to play 45 Miniutes.
3)Poor Mental health & tension for future carrier for survival.
4)Media is not supporting as non of the international match is telecasted on DD1.
5)At school level Hockey Stick is not available.
6) Team player donot play together whole year so understanding to each other is missing.
7)No hockey tournament is organised at university level.
8) Selection of players is not bassed on their merites for team.i.e. Political interference at selection level.

Stop worrying about the loss.. Erase the baggages of the past and start with a clean slate.. Get young blood in... show them success... let them see their future secure with a career in hockey... Not with those "professional" league jumborees ... get them trained well.. best fitness trainers... best sports medicos... state of the art facilities... and more media space... they will bring back our pride...

& that goes for Rediff n other Media too which are glorifying only Cricket, treating any other Sport as "Step - Sibling". Shame!

Shame on other administrators who cant market the game!!!!!
Stop playing this sport by doing this u can save the life of few hundred youngsters among billions people country !!!
Why blame Cricket ?? They have marketed the game well !!!If you dont have guts then dont cry !!!!!!!
When India have won worldcups in hockey , players salary of cricket player and hockey were same till 1975!!!
Now whats the picture ??????????
If you blame Cricket or say any other sport, four fingers directs to hockey !!!! Has Cricket got any support from the Govt????Its all abt marketing and couple of victories in 1983 and 1985-86... They took advantage of it !!!!
This year was best for hockey for India since chakde film , still silly and stupid idiot people who run hockey could not cash on it !!!! What more you need ????

Hockey should learn from Lalit Modi or say Mahesh Bhupati who are good administrators too..

The problem is too deep rooted for its to be sorted out in one year or for it to be in a position to cash in on the goodwill generated by a movie...hope you understand!!

The malaise runs deep and wide across ranks...it is not just inefficient admininstration, the fiasco can also be attributed to lack of accountability, inability to embrace change, lack of consensus among decision makers and general apathy...

This malaise has been running for 30 years and the wrongs cannot be set right in a short period of time by a myopic establishment!! What is required is a complete overhaul of the system and a timeline for concrete goals and achievements which is realistic...
