End of Hockey in India
by RAKESH DOGRA on Mar 10, 2008 03:18 PM  | Hide replies

It is no surprise that India did not qualify for Olympics. There is no point in crying over it.We need to see how hockey changed over year. From the day it strated palying on Astro trough we started loosing. Its rules were changed systematicaly to make it fast asnd power game.
Today hockey is played like football. It is very fast and stamina game. Now even playerd like Dhyan Chand would fail as its no longer artistic game where on player taking the ball and raching goal area all on his own.Today you need to give long passes and need to run realy fast which is missing in India. We are at the bottom of football ranking.Same is happening in hockey.
We need a complete new approch towards hockey. You need now forign coaches and grand planning at grass root level.Past has to be un learned and new approch to be learnt only then we may copmete at highest level.

We (Inidans) sholud give importance to our national game
by P Senthil Kumar on Mar 10, 2008 03:15 PM  | Hide replies

Now-a-days we are in very much interested in cricket. How many of us know that India's national game is hockey and has not at all qualify for the 2008 Olympics? I think even 10% of us does not know? But if you take cricket, i think around 80% know? Only when we give importance to our national game (hockey). And also our government says that they are going to reduce the importance to hockey. There are lot of school childrens playing fantastic hockey and we should encourage and new persons should be given oppturnities. Please save our national game Hockey. Thanks for all who take atleast to think of our national game.

I agree with what Sunil Kumar has said. It is not as if hockey or any other sport is ignored in India. It is just that Indian cricketers somehow managed to win some series and our media laps it up and presents them as champions. Look at tennis or golf. Did India ever have any player worth the name? But since Sania, Leander and Bhupathi began winning in tennis, and Atwal and Chiranjeev Milkha Singh in golf, these players are getting their fair due. Lets also realise that cricket is simply more liked by Indians. Has anyone heard of cricket in USA? Even if they were to have a cricket team, they would hardly be counted as they have their own baseball, American football etc. So lets start this nonsense of saying that only cricket is given support and publicity. Perform, and you will get it.
As for India not qualifying for the Olympics, FAIR ENOUGH. What else would you expect of a game managed by a person who faced sexual harassment charges? Throw this joker KPS Gill out, and see the results.

Indian Hockey
by Salil Kumar on Mar 10, 2008 03:01 PM

Viren Rasquinha must be thanking his stars he opted out of hockey to do an MBA. Or maybe he expected this to happen, seeing how he chucked his hockey career and opted out.
And that really is the crux of the matter. How any thinking sportsman can operate in the environment that is Indian hockey today is really a wonder, and you can see it's obvious results. KPS Gill should take out his ear plugs, and face the truth. He is not only ruining his own legacy, but also taking down a proud tradition with it. He really shd quit immediately, it is already too late.
Hockey needs to learn from cricket. Which is, be open to external trainers, coaches and look to fresh blood. We already have a hockey league now, they need to market it better so that it can attract more sponsors, which will help attract better overseas players too, with its attendant advantages for our players.

Hockey players should quit hockey and play ICL
by S Shrikanth on Mar 10, 2008 02:55 PM  | Hide replies

They will be better rewarded.
They will be better recognized.
They will get endorsements, TV Coverage, tons of money and most importantly - "Govt Support", which is not other sport.

restructuring indian hockey
by rahul menon on Mar 10, 2008 02:41 PM

this must be the last nail in the coffin of indian hockey.it's time to restructure it.lets start with the IHF itself.kps gill and his cronies has looted the nation enough to feed their future generations.time for former players to step in.let gill tackle the naxal problem.introduce the european style of hockey.the indian style has become outdated.also indians need to be told that they are in no way inferior to teams like aus, spain, hol, germany, etc.they seem to have an inferiorty complex while playing against these teams . they should also take a leaf out of cricket-plan and IMPLEMENT a comprehensive youth programme thruout the country ,improve infrastructure ,advertise the game more vigorously to increase the popularity of the game.let professionalism and accountability come in indian hockey!

Improvements required!
by Rahul Dhar on Mar 10, 2008 02:31 PM

It is not like that, that the team has a problem but root cause is the approach towards the winning of game is wrong. Some solutions might help if thought to be given to them as well.

1. Team Selection Procedure.
2. Preference or Nurture talent over regional casting.
3. its a more tactical game (refer to Chak De!) so requires coach with innovations rather than oldies.
4. Contigency plan. Indian sports always have a tendency of over-emphasising the winning combination. Thus they fall in the trap. Remember "Every day is a new day."
