Blame it all on cricket
by Dileep on Mar 10, 2008 01:02 PM  | Hide replies

Now that they cannot cry about money, hockey fans, players and administrators will cry about cricket taking away all the attention from them. And because of this they are losing talent and hence they are failing. It doesn't work that way. Do something worthwhile to catch attention first and then cry.

I don't know who is to held accountable for their perfornmmance. It would have been a pleasing month for India in sports after win in Cricket and Chess. But it looks like our hockey team had some other ideas.Perhaps chak de spirit was missing.

THE SPORTS DEBACLE
by damodaran mohan on Mar 10, 2008 12:58 PM  | Hide replies

The team is not that bad not to qualify for the Olympics. The result is surprising considering its good performances in 2007. The Hockey administration seems to be in pathetic condition. Best thing will be to hand over the technical sporting aspects to Rick Charlesworth comnpletely and administration to some professional body like TATA FOOTBALL ACADAMY. Too many cooks seem to be spoiling the broth, whether it was administrators/ coaches like Gill, Jyotikumaran, Bhaskaran and now Carvalho . Couple of years back the German Coach seemed to be doing well when he was summarily thrown out and now even the legendry Rick Charlesworth is seen to be sidelined in whatever capacity he is supposed to contribute. Forget Beijing Olympics , I shudder to think about the likely fate of Commonwealth games to be held in Delhi in 2010. With the serious ego clashes between the Sports minister and the IOA chairman only God can save us from some serious embarrassments.

Regionalism Killed Hockey....
by VS on Mar 10, 2008 12:52 PM  | Hide replies

Believe it or not it iS Regionalism which killed Indian hockey.... nd will going to kill all other sports too...
In the golden age of hockey, players used to be selected on the basis of their merit nd not region....
Hockey was the game of Punjabis and it was believed that no other team can defeat a team even fron sangrur in Punjab...
But this reservation on the basis of regionalism killed all that...
Now a days team doesnt consist of good players but 1 player from TN.. 1 from Kerala.... 1 from Up.... 1 from Orissa... nd so on...
this Basis of selection proved Fatal for the future of Hockey....
iF U WLL prefer regionalism to merit, then only this thing is going to happen...

I reckon it was the hold of western countries which took away hockey from India. Despite being world champs we did not show any control over creating a body to oppose the move where astro-turf replaced the natural grass hockey. that is where the stick work got replaced with shear power, and India lost it's edge.

No regionlism, it was inability to show some guts to westerns as always.

In 1980 Moscow Olympics except for Spain most of the Hockey playing countries had joined the American boycott. So it was not a true victory

So, If that is the case, India has to now pick up pick up 2 teams; 1 Punjabi Team and a Rest of India Team and let them play each other and the winner should represent India for year basis.

Football also on the same way. When India was a power in Asia, India had lot of players from Punjab and West bengal. Now, very few players from Punjab and WB. If india need to go upwards, it has to pick taller and healthy players who can inteersept with the other gays.

wat did the cricketers do ?? just winning 20-20 or beating aus dosent mean they r great.
They lost with bangladesh in world cup..cant even get into super six in world cup.
Even at that time all cricketers went home with 50 lacs ..
But when india won hockey in asia cup the whole team got only 8 lacs prize.
Cricket and hockey are game.. there is no permanent winning or defeat.
Dont think india will keep on winning in cricket

the game has to be changed
by sushil tiwari on Mar 10, 2008 12:49 PM

I feel we have to change the mindset of our players, technical and administrative staff of hockey then we can have some improvement. the game should be played with all the players involved not just 2-3 players involved at one time.
Lets say the game has been killed because of the present admin people. lets make new effort and bring up a new child for indian hockey which is not of individual but a TEAM.

Please take note England which arguably The Most Sports loving country do not have even a single world Champion or a world beating team! But still they support all sports because sports should not give room to parochial outlook!

Are you kidding? We (England) have world champions in many sports. Athletics, Boxing, Equestrianism, Rowing, Cycling, Motor cycling, Snooker, Sailing, Canoeing and have recently had WC in Judo, Triathlon, Badminton, Gymnastics, Archery, Squash and Rugby Union. We also have top competitors in Tennis, Rugby League, Formula One, Golf and loads more. Do a bit of research before you make incorrect statements.
