Very good post. I completely agree. The fingers on your two hands are enough to count the number of countries of the world that play cricket and you don't need any hand to count the number of non-Commonwealth countries (ie countries which were not a part of the British empire before 1946) that play cricket. So what makes more sense for a nation claiming to be a future superpower - invest energy and resources into something the whole world plays or into something a handful of countries play. Also, cricket does not really demand the fitness and skill required by Olympic sports. That is why it is less attractive to the world in gneral.

For GODs sake, stop blaming Cricketers!!
by sandeep kumar on Aug 14, 2008 09:45 AM  | Hide replies

People, cricket has given gems like sachin, saurav, kapil, gavaskar, bhajji, kumble etc.
1.Won world cup 83, t20 in 2007
2. Beat aussies many times over the last few yrs
3.chased 406 in the windies in 1971 against 4 gr8 fast bowlers like holding, croft, roberts, marshall etc
4. BCCi supports other sports also..gave 25 laks to bindra
5. thousands of cricket academies for kids
6. Hosted wrld cup, champions cup etcc..and world richest cricket body
7. The passion shown by Sreesanth and Harbhajan is an example to ppl on how to fight against racist people.
Pppl like Sree, robin, bhajji are the face of NEW,AGGRESIVE YOUNG INDIA!!
1 series loss against lanka will happen..remember aussies lost ashes 2005. But they came back.

Taking this into picture, Cricket shud be our national game..and its rightly said that cricket is OUR religion and SACHIN is god!

boss cricket is not even an olympic item. Kabaddi should be our national game we have won all the world cups in kabbadi. we have produced gems like munna ram, chinni ram, bola ram and tikka ram in kabbadi.
kabbadi federation gives one cup of channa for kabaddi players.
kabbadi can be played in a small place without investing anything.

Cricket's the culprit
by amrit on Aug 14, 2008 09:35 AM  | Hide replies

I do not understand why Indians cry and wail every four years during the Olympic show when every other second they are gaga over bat and ball. The sports in Olympics are the real sports where one's concentration, fitness and hard work are put to test. Only when Indians and the Indian govt. will learn to diversify their interest, enthusiasm and competition spirit from sole cricket to the myriad of other games will India begin to perform in Olympics. Getting a gold medal takes spirit, hard work and monetary moral support. Look at USA or China. These are the very reasons for their medal count.

This is called hypocrisy. Culprit is our society,we the citizen of India. Cricket is just like any other sport. And it does require concentration, patience, skills, physical strength, stamina, cool temper etc. I dont think we can degrade one game over other for the wrong reasons. We as a society have failed to have a balanced and genuine approach to sports as a whole. We worship blindly the rising sun. Now Abhinav has done something so we find great pleasure in bashing other sports. Tomorrow if God blesses us with another gold in Tennis we'll gaga over tennis. Next time it will be something else. We lack sport culture that is the bitter truth. See what happened with Monika Devi. Nobody speaks for that poor girl, she was framed wrongly. Our people do this to each other just for the sake for personal grudge, selfishness and ego. How can genuine people survive in sports in this scenario? People are flooding Abhinav with crores of rupees which he barely needs, while persons like Monika are not even showered with sympathy.

I really agree with you. In two years from now, India will host Commonwealth games, but how many people will turn up to watch at stadia with tickets bought. People can buy Cricket match tickets, but not other sports. In recent past also, even Football and Hockey matches have shown not much public in stadia. Govt. financing to sports is visisble to everyone. Coaching techniques in India are very poor as compared to EU or other medal winning countries, barring some countries. People have to change their mindset first towards other sports. I am not saying to leave cricket behind, it is indeed an interseting game and those who say that mental and physical strength is not required in this game are fools. They should get on to the field and play a 50 overs match, then it will strike them that it also needs same attention and concentration. The real point is that we can make other sports make some footprints, only if we the people of India will take distributed interest in all sports, whether included in Olympics, Commonwealth, Asian or National level. Then only we can pressurize Govts. also to raise the funds and quality.

The problem of India is actually apparent in your reply to my post Mr. Joshi. People like arguing and spending their energy uselessly instead of thinking constructively to improve their future by accepting the truth or their mistakes. We have to accept the problems as they are. We may have our own individual love for cricket but that should not blind us from the fact that all that obsession for cricket is actually harming the nation a lot and doing no or very little good.

I absolutely agree my friend, I only pointed out that Cricket is also a genuine sport, requiring all the basic talent like other sports. But we need a balanced approach. We need to encourage all the games.

Looks like you don't understand figuritive language... Cricket is not even a person. How can 'it' be a culprit?
Anyhow, I agree with your point of worshipping the rising sun. But the point is not that. The point is Indian society is too obsessed with cricket. If cricket was altogether abolished from the country (which I don;t want, but just as a supposition), the country would actually benefit a lot because people would then look for a more popular and more skillful game, and we would be able to able to grab at least one more medal.
Regarding sport culture, a culture is built. Cricket in India has not let any other sport culture build. That is exactly what Im saying.

Looks like u dont understand simple english. You bashed the game of cricket just to expose the shortcomings of society. And in the very first sentence I clarified this. The cricket is built in culture of India is not the fault of cricket rather its the fault of our society, media, policymakers, sponsors etc. So you need to degrade them, but you cant say that cricket is not requiring any skills or concentration, that is just unwarrented.

This type of euphoritic and psychophantic approach does the damage to the sports culture of our country. Cricket is just another sport. Its true that we have had good success in Cricket but that doesnt make it our religion, nor Mr. Sachin is God. This type of blind worshiping cause vacuum in the other sports. Our country needs balanced approach and genuine sports culture not blind worshiping of just one game or individuals.

I fully agree with you. We are too much obsessed with cricket. see the medal tally of Australia, UK, They also play cricket and has done well in other sports too. We like a fool concentrate only on cricket esp. IND-PAK matches and now on this new T20 circus.
Winning a medal in olypics is a real pride and honour for any sprtsperson and above all for a country.
