Dont know why people abuse Sania and Rediff
by Prasad on Jun 12, 2007 06:18 PM  | Hide replies

What wrong did Rediff commit other than posting a info about Sania win today. Being an online portal covering all sections and fields, its normal a media like Rediff to post news.
I agree she didn't win a tournament for more than 2 years but she can still maintain her ranking around 40-50 which isn't bad. Tell me why Federer cudn't win a french open title inspite of being in the final for the last 3 times. Ditto for Pete sampras. Does that mean they are useless. Unlike cricketers who only compete with 10 teams and has 10 other people to support and play along with them, she has to do it alone herself.

Some of the guys here are spitting venom on Rediff and Sania, as if she committed a murder or Rediff demanding a public holiday from Govt for this win.

Hey Prasad,
I am just surprized to read you compare Sania to Federer or Sampras. Just look at what these guys had achieved within a few years of hitting the tennis circuit with that of Sania. Sania is nowhere near these two blokes.

When she first came on to the scene she showed a lot of promise. But then this promise has to go up to the next level and deliver the Results. After so many years we are still talking about how promising Sania is. She should have been a well established player by now......

Till sampras broke thru in 1993,it was only about promise.

till federer broke thru in 2003, it was only about promise.

Sania has been on tour regularly since early 2005 and that's hardly 21/2 years.

in any case indivduals are different and context are different.

It shud not matter.

You are such a c**t! That you compare on such scales shows what an imbecile you are, Sathya...

Heard of George Best - apparently as good as Pele, who wasted his talent in women, booze and drugs, and never went anywhere.

Heard of Tracy Austin - won US Open in her teens, could not handle the pressure, burnt out.

Heard of Virender Sehwag - amazing talent with the worst attitude, dropped from even the Indian team.

Harsha Bhogle, last week in a management meet I was in mentioned that talent is just not enough, if there is no work ethic and attitude. Tendulkar, after almost 20 years at the top, still goes out every day and practises the basics... Sadly, Sania falls in that category.

So you wait, d**k in hand. But true champions show signs of what they can do early. Its a very competitive arena these days, with no quarters given. Either she is fit, in body and mind to win, or even younger girls are winning against her.

So don't harp on age and tenure alone. That will not work here. Gone are the days of 30 year old champs - here Steffi Graf retired at 26. And I hope, being the expert, you know what she had achieved by the time she was 20.

I read a lot of messages, where people feel bad, as an Indian girl is not at 1st or 2nd position but at 48th position. Its so easy to blame someone...
The other day I was reading an artcle of some young cricketer who suicide of not able to make to India cricket team. He has lots of family problems. India now is not a country for the sports persons. Exception is of few cricketers. Its very hard to get sponsership for any game other than cricket. Those who make it to some level, they have to struggle a lot.
How many here are ready to push their children to play tennis and make a career in that. So before you blame somebody think again.
In developed country one can think of making career in sports. From the highschool level he can earn during playing. Its not possible in India.

Boss,

Agreed completely. Should we not, therefore, focus on those struggling talents, and maybe discover a gem there, rather than squander resources over obviously talented but misdirected individuals?

Look at our cricketers, and where all the attention has taken them. We last won a tournament of more than 5 teams in 1985, yet we hero-worship these guys and fund their careers.

Sania is definitely a fantastic talent, but should we have headlines if she wins ONE match? All this while other talents die without support?

I shudder to think how many die-hard fans on this board will die of heart attacks the day she actually wins some tournament, so used to celebrating little victories that they are.

SO DO you think Mr AB criticizing Sania or saying her shame would bring all of our hidden talent from all of the remote talent of our country. If this you can do dat I will be first to criticize her or for dat matter anybody.
The sports and for that matter any talent u want to nurture require a ideal or one hero. So they deserve respect and some recognition so dat this generation kids could look up to them and say we wanted to like her.
Stop criticizing

Well done Sania,
I feel there are lot many discouraging frnds in this board. We should be proud of her because at this moment she is the only indian to make mark in International arena. No matter how she performance in next round it need lot of hard work to play and win and for everyone correction that most of the she losses to higher seed players. So atleast she is consistent with her performance n maintains her ATP ranking. She isn't world best player but she is India's best tennis player and she deserve encouragement so do our Indian Hockey layers who were third in last Azlan shah trophy (despite they have no support from govt or virtually no sponsorship. So plz don't demoralize our fellow Indian and atleast represent us in different tournament. Look in so many sports there is no one to represent India. So stop criticizing and and encourage her for better performance.

The problem, sir, is that in every field India is the world's best. In tennis, should we accept being the world's 48th as the best we can do?

Isn't this a matter of shame?

Encouragement she has had plenty - in every way. Where is the commitment to do better and live up to the billing of "India's best"? Why should we be satisfied being India's best and not be the best in the world?

Nobody here is discouraging anyone. Everybody will celebrate if whe wins something, anything.

But to be blind to reality and go on accepting low par performances because is stupid...

why does a stupid ignoramus like you talk about "reality"?

you have a lot to learn first before you lecture others you misguided illiterate.

In the previous page(where i could not reply)
you talked about federer stopping sampras in 2001.

That was after three years on tour!

even after that he came with more disappointing losses.

Sania has not even completed three years on tour!

Then why the f**k you want world class performances from sania when you see that even Federer took 5 years to get to no 1?

You shud understand that all players go through a period of growing up before their games become complete.

your ignorance is making you make stupid judgements and comments.

As for the atp and wta tour,i have debated with the best fans in the world having so many years experience. you are just a bloody nobody i could not care less about.

AS for why i support sania's potential, i can explain with the full details. I have far more insight into tennis than you amd your ilk can ever dream of.

but i doubt thick skulls like you are the best auidence.

you don't even understand the basic difference between potential and results.

you are a deluded ignorant idiot.period.

Hello Mr AB,
My dear, Wat point are u talking ab't. We are not at all shameful dat she is 42nd (correction not 48th) because in this big populated country we have one one.
In this best sporting country has we have athlete who are selected and asked to prepare for Olympics at a 6 months notice (where China take care of child education and health since a young age). Than our national game which has got so much of funding that they get valuable 180 Rs daily dieting allowance(While Pak hockey player has so many sponsor). As per your argument the Best in every field this country has produced number of women tennis player and Sania ranks last among all of them.
My dear if the best in every field this country has given this much of infrastructure that every hidden talent has grown and made his/her mark in international arena so Sania is a faliure at this rank. I also agree it may be blind support for her if i ignore ab't her week serve, less stamina, and so many unforced error in any close match but even than she is atleast trying but I don;t see any other.
That's why b'coz no body support sports in country and few who try than other only try to show tham down for no reason. I say our cricket team is pathetic without any shame and they are all bunch of looser. They are waste of time and money (though it;s all sponsor money not govt money) not Narian Kartikey, Jaspal Rana , Our so many unnamed athletes, Boxers, Anju bobby george,Archery fellow and there are many who are fighting for

by SONI BHATTACHARYA on Jun 13, 2007 05:20 PM
Mohan,

Whats your point, you seem to be agreeing with me, yet disaggreeing.

I am saying the same thing - that we focus our resources on those more deserving.

And please - do not think of Sania as someone who had to struggle due to lack of infrastructure. She has been spoilt first by affluence, then by the attention, which has obviously gone to her head. Sania has talent, but little application of that to win. Thats why although she is "trying" as you say, there is no improvement beyond the first round, and none to her weak areas. Possibly because she, like our great cricketers, has started believing that whatever little she achieves, there will be fans back home to sing her praise. So why try harder?

Anyway, you sit and admire and drool...the reality (whether the "expert" Satya accepts or not), is that the national obsession with her nose pin is not helping her or the cause of sports in the country.

Wow Sanjay! You must Einstein! Your understanding is immense!

By your supreme logic, only an actor can criticise another, a poet criticise a poet, and a tennis player another! Wow!

I am not in competition with either Sania or your daughter! So keep this valuable insight to yourself.

Weren't you just abusing Hindus and Indians? Why do I dignify you with a response???
