We have to improve
by Viraj Desai on Aug 30, 2004 06:43 PM

The olympics came to an end yesterday with US emerging yet again as the top medal winners.
BUT did any one notice that there were about 3-4 indian born athletes in the medal tally for the US.
The problem with INDIA at the olympics is that the people who are good sports person leave india because of lack of infrastructure.
the remaining who stay back do that for the sake of patriotism.
The only problem with India is not that we don't have talent or heart(i remember reading about an indian girl who despite immense pain ran in a track event and came second in the heat & on the other hand there was Malleswari Who went to the olympics only coz she was getting lakhs in sponsorship)
The problem lies in basic infrastructure and the cricket crazy public.
We have to realize that our cricket team are total suckers and they play only for money.they never have the will to win & they claim they are the 2nd best team in the world.
i think even BANGLADESH is a better team then ours.WE shuld just stp funding cricket and even wtching it Instad all the money that the BCCI gets should be utilized for infrastructure in other sports that we are good at like shooting, archery,wt.lifting, long jump

we need a sports revolution

I am not satisfied with the outcome of the Olympic games for India. The reason for failure is not the athletes or players but the worst kind of beaurocratic set-up of our sports organization.I hope that if we can introduce following reforms to make India successful in Olympics.
1. Prioritization of games in which we can do well.
2. Establishment of Sports Academies in other countries and training of selected sportspersons in these academies without any interference from local beaurocrats.
3.Categorization of allocated funds to various sports on the basis of the prospects of winning a medal.Certain thrust areas must be decided.

Sports Culture
by samarsena on Aug 30, 2004 06:25 PM

Though most comments on this board blame blameable things for the debacle at the Olympics, none has blamed the most blameable. 1) India being a Cricket crazy country doesn't bother about other sports: What about Australia?-Cricket and Rugby being its number one and two sports. 2) India is a poor country and doesn't spend enough money on sports infrastructure and on Athletes?: What about some poorer, smaller African countries. They win few medals regularly.
The most blameable thing is the SPORTS CULTURE, which we are lacking. Most of the Australians on week ends go for Rugby, Swimming, Football etc. In Britain, even middle aged people play Hockey and Football at the weekends. This is because the Sports Culture in these countries is very strong. By the way what most Indians do at their free time? (Here I am not talking about the vast population who are below poverty line, but the middle class, higher middle class, and the rich class).
Strong SPORTS CULTURE backed by good infrastructure can only bring medals. This is the responsibility of the whole society-not government alone.

Poor Selection
by Senthil Kumar on Aug 30, 2004 05:49 PM

we seen our selection of sportsmen is very bad, first thing our peoples no energy to equalize the opponent. we have to select a people who they are really love sports & not the people who love fame and money... moreover our government not asking any results from the coach...anyway better luck next time..

I think the the performance of our players at Athens is better than the effort given by the Government on them on providing Coach ad infrastuctures support.

olympic medal
by Rajashekhar on Aug 30, 2004 04:39 PM

Can any one ever imagine a 14 year boy or girl from india winning a medal in olympics. forget about the medal, at least participation is a big question. Its not that on should start trainig just 1 or 2 years befor the olympics. it should be a continous practice to achieve world standards.
Coming to one more important thing.... does the money allocated to the sports is rightly utilized on the sports persons? is a big question. where does all this money go....? in INDIA, this question does not have an answer...................!
It will be very disheartening to see, non sports persons heading the sports authorities in INDIA.
