Adulation
by Ananth on Aug 31, 2004 08:35 PM

Maybe its time Indians started accepting victories with grace. Everytime someone wins something we treat them like gods and they stop achieving anything more. The deserve praise but there must be a limit to monetary compensation just for winning one medal. They must be motivated to keep winning. Its time India gave more responsibility to medal winners and potential medal winners, then just more money.

Make the officials accountable
by Ravichandran. B on Aug 31, 2004 04:58 PM

I'll never agree if the atheletes say that we don't have enough facilities in India. We have better facilities than countries like Kenya. We reward the sportspersons also in a much better way than atheletes from Russia are awarded. The only difference between countries like Russia, US, China and India is, there the coaches are knowledgeable. They impart the latest techniques for the sports persons. The Government itself identifies promising kids at a tender age, give them the best possible training and make them into world champions.More important fact is, Sports is always kept away from Politics. In India, the IOA President is a Politician and not a sports person. The same can be said of IHF where K.P.S.Gill is still able to hang on to his post despite repeated failures by the Indian Hockey team. In every Olympics, the officials outnumber the no. of atheletes from India.Gold medal in Olympics cannot be won overnight. We think of Olympics only once in 4 years. We also send the atheletes to Olympics if they achieve 70% of the excellence world champions from their respective disciplines achieved.Doping test should be carried out at regular intervals.Stop politicizing sports.Rest will follow

factors of failure
by Jayanthi on Aug 31, 2004 05:25 AM

Though India's population is touching China's people who are interested in sports are very less in our country when compared to China. And there are various other factors other than this. Firstly, sports should become a compulsory at the same time interesting subject right from our school days. Secondly, our present day politics. Politics serves as one of the major impediments in culling out efficient sports persons from all over the country. Change should come in every individual as well as in the minds of politicians. Till then getting medals will be a rare occasion in India's sports history.

What should India do? Focus on Beijing 2008, 2012
by Smita on Aug 31, 2004 12:33 AM

To Mr. Sunil Dutt, Sports Minister. The Olympics are over
and we have seen the performance of our country. Its
pathetic. The lone silver medal thats all! Though I must give
credit and congratulate our female athletes who were
incredible in spite of lack of high tech resources. What can
we do to improve our position in Olympics? It is high time
that the government should hand over sports to the private
companies like Reliance, Sahara, and many others where
there is no corruption, its free and fair, determination,
discipline, coaching, rigorous training, facilities and most of
all the focus and goal to win a medal in Olympics. Our
county is not serious in any other sports other than Cricket.
The sports should be included in school curriculum and
should find who are bright and talented in sports and coach
them at a very early age. These are the things the
government should think and implement immediately. We
cannot just sit and watch other countries pass by with great
performance, and every time after Olympics, think what went
wrong with our team and play blame game. From today
itself we should focus on Mission Beijing may be we will
see few more medals in our kitty.

Well...there is still a road ahead
by Vikram on Aug 30, 2004 10:57 PM  | Hide replies

I guess the Indian coningent should not be perturbed by the dismal performance in the Olympics. Maybe they should be exposed more to world events and constant practise and a good pay for all the athletes would eventually lead them to get a better, infact a positive energy in the games they play.

Kudos to our athletes
by RKNFan on Aug 30, 2004 10:40 PM

Thanks for participating in the face of huge odds. We need intent, training, facilities and proper compensation to compete at the same level as other athletes. We will get there ... after we solve our basic needs.

please listen to me
by javed on Aug 30, 2004 08:36 PM

When someone talks about the following in the context of sport, i get really upset:
1. bad coaches
2. poor administration
3. government and politics
These are only excuses which we as Indians have gotten so used to that now it is the color of our blood. All you have to do to win in sport is the following, which our athletes lack in huge measure-
1. killer instinct
2. killer instinct
3. killer instinct
Choose any on the above qualities to be ingrained into an athlete to make him successful, and he will be. The following words have been used to describe the performances by our athletes in Athens-
1. tame performance
2. fouled out
3. went down fighting
India is the second most populous country but quantity does not matter, quality does. Athletes should think about a sport event as the only one they would ever get in their lives and go beyond human and physical limits to win and succeed. Sport is much about testing the physical limits as it is about testing the spiritual realms as well. Victory is not just finishing ahead of everyone else in a silly race,it is about a journey into the depths of one's mind, the keys of which lie with the individual.
Coaches can only guide.

by ganeshanraju on Aug 30, 2004 06:59 PM

if india has to really come in league with usa, china and russia than the entire sports has to be handed over to the indian military and disband all the federation and all remove all political attachments and send them at 2012 olympics .
