Our performance was not bad...
by L.Y.Rao. on Aug 29, 2004 09:38 PM

Dear Mr.Editor,
Granted that Mr.Sunil Dutt is not a sportsman or an expert in Sports...
But his sacking of various coaches and officials, and indicting others in general, but his "letting off" Suresh Kalmadi without even as much as a reprimand proves that a Politician should NEVER be made the President of the I.O.A.
Our "performance" was definitely a very poor and definitely "thirdrate",most"performers" did not even reproduce their performance inorder to "qualify"...Inspite of the qualifying marks being lower than even the Seventh best or similar,in most
of the events...
The whole of India wants Kalmadi and Dalmia and ofcourse the "lazy,non-performing Ganguly" to sacked immediately...!
L.Y.Rao.

worshipping mediocrity
by Vivek Gupta on Aug 29, 2004 09:15 PM

Only a person with an IQ of 50 will conclude that India's performance at Olympics was not bad. It was worse than bad, it was pathetic to the highest degree. Our sports minister's comments give you a telling comment that how mediocre our standards are. He says that "it is not easy to finishe 7th or 8th in olympic events", he clearly seems satisfied that we are finishing there year after year decade after decade. It is this attitude which has made India a mediocre country despite having the second highest number of human resources. Moreover, our esteemed sports minister takes the example of Marion Jones who failed for once but fails to give the example of Phelps and others who succeedeeded beyond imagination. If we continue to have such people at the helm of affairs we will continue to fail miserbaly for any number of decades to come.

Our Olypmic Performance
by Anoop Mitra on Aug 29, 2004 09:01 PM

It is sad to hear Mr. Dutt saying our performance was not bad. It was downright pathetic. A country of 1 billion cannot produce more than one medal !!. Countries smaller than ours, with much less facilities have done better.

Rather than accept that our performance is pathetic and Indian sports needs a huge wake up, Mr. Dutt's comments once again emphasize the reason we fail, the lack of acceptance of our shortfalls and keep blaming everyone else for the problem.

Mr. Dutt, please try and do something to help Indian sport, remove the money from cricket and put it into other sports. Sack not only coaches, but non performing atheletes and office bearers who have ruined Indian sports.

Mr dutt's comments show once again, that a lack of a sportsperson as a head of the sports ministry can make.

Bad comments

I do not agree with Mr Dutt, he i suppose still lives in the fantasy world of movies. Why should we look at Jones and find solace. It is not individuals that matter like in the movies,it is the country. USA has won 100 medals. And don't tell me that Kenya, Morocco, Argentina,Ethiopia, have better facilities than we do but still they have more medals. If we have to spend millions and millions of rupees on facilities and get one medal what gurantee is there that these do called atheletes will get anymore medals if we increase this spending. Infact i would say this money can be better spent in otherways...there are so many more useful place to invest this money than on these stupid athelets who look for excuses.
All of them have had a nice pleasure trip to Athens paid by the tax payer. Infact I should ask Mr. Dutt to hold himself morally responsible and step down from the post. A country of 1 billion could only produce 1 silver medal...this is unbelievable.
I a most annoyed at the minister trying to make excuses. It was the most pathetic performance by anyone i have ever seen. These people donot play for the country. All of the atheletes should be barred from further participation.

I DISAGREE IT WAS BAD
by antara on Aug 29, 2004 08:20 PM

I am sorry I do not agree it was bad. It was bad because our people went there not with the spirit of competing they went there on the country's money with little pride in what they had to do. I think it is no good just saying that so and so of this country with so many resources also came fifth. I think they should not be our standards and neither the excuse of we do not have the resources. The sacking of coahes is good and I think anyone who goes for such events shoudl have certain levels of qualifications or else we should not send such a large contingent. We need to support and make other sports in India as enthused as cricket is.

This in no way undermines the efforts put in by some athletes and competetitors but I am commenting upon our style of passing on the buck on lame excuses. I think we need to wake up Ethiopia for god sake's won a gold so who are we fooling.

Please Mr Dutt instead of looking so far as 2012 I think talk of the next Olympics and if we have the belief the pride and the will nothing can and will stop us the conviction should be there.

thank you

Poor show at Olympics
by ravisoni on Aug 29, 2004 08:20 PM

Mr. Sports Minister if this performance is not bad then what is a bad performance. Most participants where simply travellers having good time. It was pathetic, barring Rathor's brave efforts, to say the least. Give us a break from political talk.

good performance???
by s on Aug 29, 2004 08:15 PM

I think Dutt is crazy. If this is a good performance ..I think we are the most unambitious and undetermined people in the world. Kenya and Iran arent really rich countries. Eritria is not a rich country. Syria and Mongolia have nothing going for them economically. Bahamas is a tiny island - population less than the city of Kochi. Egypt and Chile are backward countries. They all don't have the so called great facilities that Marion Jones has. The dont have the money that Maurice Green and Shawn Crawford have. But they come out and performed. I think unless Dutt acknowledges the fact that we are not a nation willing to compete in the world scene and that we are spineless nation not willing to assert ourselves in the world stage, we will never be able to improve and do well. Simply blaming the fact that we have no money etc is a crime. We make the best software and movies in the world - but we arent good enough to win a medal! The reason is we have dumb beaurcrats like Dutt leading the show. Let's get some tough cookies who are determined and have some national pride. This was an awfull performance for a country of 1 billion. Cheering 6th place finishes and qualifying sucks...

sorry...
by Kabir on Aug 29, 2004 07:31 PM

not bad??? A country of 1 billion should not be so proud of getting one silver medal home when countries half there size like Australia are doing so much better.
