I agree with Mr. Dutt
by Anurag pande on Aug 30, 2004 12:39 AM

Hi all...
Actually I think Mr. Dutt was right in saying that. We can NOT get from nowhere to top 3 in a matter of couple of years. We are improving for sure....in atheletics we reached final of two events....more importantly atleast five of our track and field girls gave their best performance. Lot of national records were broken in Athens, whcih is a very good sign. We almost never do it in Olympics.

You can give me the China example, but to tell you the truth, I dont want my government to pressurize the athletes all day long that if they dont perform they are going to some desert location to spend rest of their life. This is what they do in China, we don't want that forced honor, we are deeper than that.

Now, is there scope for improvement, sure there is. We should keep up and even speed up the good work, get some private orgnizations for sponsorship. I believe there is a lesson to be learnt from Cricket here.

Lets be more optimistic and learn to be patient.

Anurag

mr dutt is right
by vikram on Aug 30, 2004 12:36 AM

mr dutt is aware tht the performance was poor but he did not want to demotivate them (participants) those were encourgaing words and thoughtful comments. we never try to read betwwen lines just hv the habit of discoraging sprotsmen. if they feel the performance was poor then why dont they themselves participate and get the medal. its not important to win but it is imporatant to pur efforts and sicerity and dedication when u participate..medals will follow in the time to come. be optimist in ur thoughts and action.

I feel sorry for you Mr.Sunil Dutt !!
by Goutom.C on Aug 30, 2004 12:28 AM

Not quite unexpected ....the comment from our honourable sports minister !

This debacle called " Sports Ministry " is only because of people like Mr.Dutt, Mr.Dasmunshi , Mr.Malhotra's of this country !!

I , as a tax payer a citizen of this country , want an explanation for this humiliating performance of this Indian contingent.
I want to know why these under prepaired , drug taking athletes were sent for the Olympics in the first place !!
I want to know why so many officials accompany these athletes ???
How am I different from these officials ?? Or how are YOU , my fellow citizens , different from these officials ???
I want to know why the sports ministry spent crores of ruppes in sending a sub standard contingent ??
Just to be 5th , 6th 7th ???
Look at other Asian Countries !! China ,Japan , S.Korea, Indonesia , Thailand , Iran !!
I want an explanation !!
I say even 4th isn't good enough !!!! Its out of the medals bracket !! Mr.Dutt , this is not a a movie " Mother India " this is humiliating our ' Mother India ' & that your perspective is limited to those very superficial comments is apparent from what you said !!
I feel sorry for you Minister..really sorry !

Nonsensical remark by the Hon'ble Minister
by Ravi Manneth on Aug 29, 2004 11:49 PM

Dear Sir,

How could our sports minister say that India's performance was not bad?.It's shameful for a country of more than 1 billion people to have satisfied with a lone silver medal and comment the performance as not bad!In India there's no derth of talents but the talents have to be identified and nurtured by the Govt.Just take the example of China which used to get two to four Golds in the eighties has now 31 Golds and stands second in the medal tally. What a Herculean effort they have done over the years and achieved the stature they hold now! They should be our role model atleast in this field.Only lip service to the athletes won't do;they need meterial benefits too, aplenty.

Usual Politics
by shriram on Aug 29, 2004 11:35 PM

The Usual political messages, the usual "next time we will do good" statements. We've gotten tired of such stuff. Most of us have resigned to the fact that, unless something drastic happens, there can be not much of improvement in our performance. We have stopped expecting and I dont know why these politicians still want to keep fooling us with these statements. Mr. Dutt talks about Marion Jones and compares her to our atheletes, Stupid, just shows his ignorance about her past performances.
Its just ridiculous.....

Raj Prasad
Sports Minister
by Raj Prasad on Aug 29, 2004 11:33 PM

I understand the frustration of most of the respondents but you all miss the point. We Indians are crybabies, we want someone else to take care of us and if things go wrong want a scapegoat. How many of you go and see and encourage our Cricketers, spend millions on them and they go and loose to Sri Lanka, they will loose to Holland or any other country. A second division football team from Europe or South America can run circle around our best team. I am sure the US Womens team today can win big against our best means team. It has two components that we Indians do not have. They have the physical condition and the winning mental attitude.

A pat on the back, from authority figure is needed. You cannot chastise the people who are trying. If they really try.

As for spending taxpayer monies, you have very poor rate of return.

Athens

Our performance was shameful, except for Rathore, Anju, and the 4X400 team. We appreciate a good try. We also must accept that the sports minister has to say these nice words. If your child goes to 1st day of school and brings back a poorly drawn sketch, would you chastise or praise and hang that picture on your refrigerator.
However, for a country of billion people this is shameful performance, our present bunch of athletes including Cricketers are wasting taxpayers money.
We need to import new gene to improve our breed (that is what is done in racehorses or Greyhounds), or we need to change our culture. We do not have the winning attitude, we get by, we are satisfied with what we have, after all, we were satisfied with Ambassador Cars for 30 years.

Does he know what he is saying?
by Prashant on Aug 29, 2004 11:15 PM

Does Sunil dutt, know what is talking about? If we feels that our performance in the Olympic games is not BAD, then we have a case of a wrong guy at the wrong place.

He will have to get his priorities straight. If coming sixth, seventh, eighth is ok for him, then, we need a change dude!!!
