Politically incorrect view
by SANJAY SENGUPTA on Jun 17, 2017 08:53 PM

it appears that the author has an unclear understanding about the role of Indian President. Although a President is supposed to be a figure , some knowledge and experience about public administration and foreign affair is essential to discharge his duties smoothly. technocrats like A P J Abdul kalam or E Sreedharan (proposed) are misfit simply because apart from lack of exposure in political life ,technocrats they are known to have one tract mind , as against generalists who have a more inclusive view.
since it is a political post , a person with sustained exposure in political life is more suitable than a non political person who comes through lateral hire.
his view that only two past presidents stands out , is uncharitable if we consider that the post has also been occupies by persons like pranab mukherjee having encyclopedic knowledge about political science and foreign affairs, V V Giri , an eminent trade union leader ,a highly Dr Zakir hussian to name a few

Unnikrishnan Nayar
President
by Unnikrishnan Nayar on Jun 17, 2017 08:03 PM

Comment by the author about Jawahar Lal is not warranted. Animosity is present in the author's comments. But as President is concerned it can be any body who is a good person who can work fearlessly. Comments by him about past Presidents is not a good thing to make.

Denigrating message

The author need not denigrate past presidents as persona non grata. He should know them and their achievements before passing comments. His comments are disgraceful and disrespectful to the highest office. You can always praise whom ever you want with out insulting others and spreading falsehoods and inappropriate opinions

This author Rajeev Srinivasan is a Tamilian or Mallu. They obviously praise people from their own communities. This is what others have to learn and put in to practice. He can even recommend Tharoor for president post so that even Tarar can sit in Rajbhavan.

Controversial and guilty too

Dr.Sarvepalli Gopal, in the biography of his father says that Babu Rajendra Prasad (who was at the helm for 13 years (3 years as Head of the Constituent Assembly and 2 full terms as President) deprived Dr.Radhakrishnan of Presidency when it was due. Zail Singh is known for his infamous readiness to sweep the floor of Rashtrapathi Bhavan if Indira Gandhi so desired. Fakruddin Ali Ahmed was guilty of bringing many Bangladeshis for his vote bank. Sanjeeva Reddy had the distinction of appointing as Prime Minister a leader with only 10% following. V.V.Giri was the only President whose election was challenged. Shankar Dayal Sharma was known to dabble in politics of nepotism while in the august office. Prathibha Patil converted her office as a resort for her near and distant relatives. She also diverted the gifts she received to her personal museum in Pune. President's office lost its glitter within the first decade itself.
