The author's suggestion to elect an eminent writer as President will never work in India. There are two dozen major languages in India each boasting of rich literature and eminent writers. I can speak with personal knowledge that Telugu readers feel that there are half a dozen writers who deserve Nobel prize. The situation with other languages will not be any different. Sadly, we do not have sufficient number of competent translators and Indians do not know enough about the literature of other languages. If, say a Malayali author is put up as a candidate, MPs and MLAs of other languages will not vote for him.
it appears that the author has an unclear understanding about the role of Indian President. Although a President is supposed to be a figure , some knowledge and experience about public administration and foreign affair is essential to discharge his duties smoothly. technocrats like A P J Abdul kalam or E Sreedharan (proposed) are misfit simply because apart from lack of exposure in political life ,technocrats they are known to have one tract mind , as against generalists who have a more inclusive view. since it is a political post , a person with sustained exposure in political life is more suitable than a non political person who comes through lateral hire. his view that only two past presidents stands out , is uncharitable if we consider that the post has also been occupies by persons like pranab mukherjee having encyclopedic knowledge about political science and foreign affairs, V V Giri , an eminent trade union leader ,a highly Dr Zakir hussian to name a few
