Is the query of Dr Lakshmi Vijayakumar is in Right direction!!
by pradeep kumar on Oct 25, 2013 02:33 PM  | Hide replies

Dr Lakshmi Vijayakumar of the suicide prevention NGO Sneha examines :1.There are more suicides in southern states because of three reasons. One, southern states are more literate than the northern states. With education comes higher level of expectations and that gives rise to disappointments.2.The number of suicides is high in the rural areas because of the easy availability of pesticides. If you look at the data of Tamil Nadu, you will see that 75 per cent of the suicides in Tamil Nadu take place in rural areas. Question arises Are the rural Population is more educated than Urban population of TN? If so, then Dr. is right in her assessment,if not than her reason are not substantiating her argument.Since she finds the southern population is more educated and their expectation are higher than their their achievement. Secondly if 75 percent suicide are taking place in rural TN than those educated population should not get their expectation be fulfilled in villages. They have migrate to urban rather Metro city to achieve their higher Goal and save the country's intellectualproperty. Is not It !!.

you seem to be completely confused..! Read it proper and use your brain. You will understand that she talks sense. On a relative scale, TN, or any southern state rural population is more educated than the rural belt in other states. And u dont go for a linear comparison like a graduate will be less prone to suicide than a post graduate!

professionals also to blame
by dinesh kumar on Oct 25, 2013 02:21 PM

the neglect of mental health by fellow doctors of other specialties also contribute a lot in not preventing suicides.even in U.S.70% of those who commit suicide consult their family doctors or some other medical professional with NONSPECIFIC MEDICAL complaints, which are investigated heavily and then patient is told not to worry because it is all TENSION.The hands of (Selectively)ignorant are tainted with the blood of the helpless.

Suicide a major issue in Japan and west as well...

Suicide is a major issue in Japan and the West as well.

This shows that increasing complexity of life and increasing desires tend to unbalance a person if he is not rooted well in some philosophical or religious or spiritual system.

As the great Indian leader B.R.Ambedkar stated,"Every man must have a philosophy of life, for everyone must have a standard by which to measure his conduct."

A purely materialistic life and its complexity and unlimited desires fails to satisfy a person. And the very high level of suicides in the west and Japan highlights this problem.

It is interesting to note that Anna Hazare himself stated that he was close to committing suicide until he found solace in the works of Swami Vivekananda after he bought a book on Swami Vivekananda at a Delhi railway station bookstall.

This inspired him to devote his life to serving society.

A good spiritual education, devoid of superstitious nonsense, can help a person lead a productive life without succumbing to the stress ,strains and pressures of the material world.

In the case of Japanese, the culture plays an imortant factor. From their childhood they are inculcated pride in their country, what they do and failure is discouraged. Each Japanese takes pride in thier work and even if there is a minor flaw in what they do or what they expect as a result it is seen as reflection of thier ability to perform at the maximum. I still remember a Japanese consultant committed sucicide in Tutocorin when the plant they designed took 9 extra hours than what was promised to achieve the maximum output. Compared to Indians who will rationalize even if the plant took additional 9 extra months. It is attitude one has.

Pride in workmanship is very good, as it leads to individual and national progress.

However committing suicide over it is not the right step, and shows an unbalanced, unhealthy mindset.

The right step is to review what went wrong in the project, and ensure it does not happen again and performing the project optimally next time.

As the 6P saying goes ,"Proper Planning and Preparation Prevents Poor Performance."

Though I admire the Japanese consultant's drive and intensity, I would not want anyone in the world to commit suicide in this regard.

The right thing for the Japanese consultant was to introspect and review what went wrong in the project, and ensure it does not happen again and performing the project optimally next time.

To punish himself for his inadequacy in the prior project, he should then strive to complete his next project 9 or 18 hours of the deadline.

This would be a good self-punishment for self-motivation.

Taking one's life is not correct.

Smiling is a sign of a positive attitude and cheerfulness.

Exactly what is needed to combat the depression that leads to suicide.

Vitamin D deficiency is associated with anxiety and depression in

Abstract
Fibromyalgia is a complex problem in which symptoms of anxiety and depression feature prominently. Low levels of vitamin D have been frequently reported in fibromyalgia, but no relationship was demonstrated with anxiety and depression. Seventy-five Caucasian patients who fulfilled the ACR criteria for fibromyalgia had serum vitamin D levels measured and completed the Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire (FIQ) and Hospital Anxiety and Depression Score (HADS). Deficient levels of vitamin D was found in 13.3% of the patients, while 56.0% had insufficient levels and 30.7% had normal levels. Patients with vitamin D deficiency (

Food plays a role in mood and anxiety levels. Anxiety builds up over time leading to depression.

Food habits have changed. Traditional grains kambu, cholam, ragi have more nutrients. Pulses, Lentils and Mutton from grazing goat/sheep are rich in Omega fatty acids that can improve mood and tolerate pain.

Yoga is a big mind-booster.

However I must say that the researcher erred when she says that the southern states never fought any wars.

The southern states have an excellent martial tradition.

The martial art of Kalaripayattu was extensively practiced in Kerala continuously for many centuries to the present day.

Same too with silambam, Marma Adi and Kuttu Varisai in Tamil Nadu.

The Keralites had fought wars against the Portuguese under the calicut zamorin and Kunhali Marikkar, against the Dutch under Marthanda Varma and Britishers under Pazzhasi Raja.

The tamilians have an excellent naval tradition and fought wars against the British under Veerapandiya Kattabomma and Puli Thevar.

The Andhras too had a great martial tradition in the Viyanagara empire.

Abstract

We review the findings in major depression of a low plasma and particularly red cell folate, but also of low vitamin B12 status. Both low folate and low vitamin B12 status have been found in studies of depressive patients, and an association between depression and low levels of the two vitamins is found in studies of the general population. Low plasma or serum folate has also been found in patients with recurrent mood disorders treated by lithium. A link between depression and low folate has similalrly been found in patients with alcoholism. It is interesting to note that Hong Kong and Taiwan populations with traditional Chinese diets (rich in folate), including patients with major depression, have high serum folate concentrations. However, these countries have very low life time rates of major depression. Low folate levels are furthermore linked to a poor response to antidepressants, and treatment with folic acid is shown to improve response to antidepressants. A recent study also suggests that high vitamin B12 status may be associated with better treatment outcome. Folate and vitamin B12 are major determinants of one-carbon metabolism, in which S-adenosylmethionine (SAM) is formed. SAM donates methyl groups that are crucial for neurological function. Increased plasma homocysteine is a functional marker of both folate and vitamin B12 deficiency. Increased homocysteine levels are found in depressive patients. In a large population study from Norway increased plasma

The main reason is increased expectations...
by ragesh aravindan on Oct 25, 2013 01:19 PM  | Hide replies

The main reason for the spurt in suicides in these states is because of the high level of expectations due to high literacy , as the researcher pointed out.

This is mainly due to egotism, desires and increase in materialistic tendencies and increasing complexity of life.

I would say that the right thing in this regard is to create a focus on simple living and a simple lifestyle , creating a culture of dignity of labour wherein manual labour is seen as dignified and essential and to be done even by highly educated people without any sense of ego.

A good support system for entrepreneurship should also be developed in these states.

A good atmosphere of spirituality also has to be developed so that people will be less egotistic and materialistic and more humble and natural and be able to absorb pressure well without breaking down.

Good individual leadership through example, and character is key in creating these social and cultural reforms which is much needed in the south.
