Ambassador or italian apolgist
by Arun Venkataraman on Mar 18, 2013 07:12 AM  | Hide replies

Its strange to see an indian ambassador talking so much for Italians even when there are indian lives lost. There was no mention of Indian lives that lost in the article, however the superficial and spiced-up diplomacy seems to be much more important to the indian interests in the article.

The SC giving special leave for Christmas and Italian Voting is clearly a huge mistake and god alone knows what central govt was doing in such crazy judgements.

Thanks,
Venkat

Some "diplomats" and bureaucrats have the tendency to spit venom against India and Indianness to earn cheap popularity. Sad.

Beg to disagree. I have great respect for Mr. Bhadrkumar and his real concern for India. He can see the risks ahead and desires to reconcile.

The ideas he has expressed forthrightly, factors in the compromises India had to make in past to face the real threats by making friends far and wide. Phenomenal and outstanding work has been done by senior officers for safeguarding India.

It is hunky dory to talk from armchairs; real life is awfully more real.

However, armchair efforts are also useful to expand the systemic capability of the society. But in the end, there must be diplomatic reconciliation and strengthening of relationships between the two great nations.

Creating bigger capacity with a firmer legal framework for coping with higher levels of business activities and strategic interaction is the goal. For this, let us begin by redeeming the image and recognizing real worth.

ghare baire, the inter-related nature of capacity building
by Ramesh on Mar 18, 2013 05:41 AM  | Hide replies

That is the decades past India has been a soft state is pretty well-known. Yet there were few clear principles to which India held steadfast, which safeguarded India from becoming a pliant state like Pakistan which eventually derailed their democracy. And the average Khan in Pakistan is totally opposed to West in general and US in particular.

Safeguarding the reach of Indian law and extending its applicability on a reciprocal basis to all nations which do serious business is critical for healthy long term relationship with developed west.

There are even more serious tests ahead. Whether Italy and UK shall permit the executives who violated the agreed sense of the defense contract in Helicopter procurement to be subject to due process of Indian law? The sudden stiffening and brazen non-compliance putting their own ambassador at risk may be due to constituency which seeks to protect the turf of defense suppliers.

The real strength of a nation is the sanctity of its laws and unity of its people. While making effort to become a hard state to the external society, the capacity to be a fair legal state to its own people gets created in civil democracy. While India is falls short on both counts presently; the integral and simultaneous nature of these two processes, external and intra-national, needs to be appreciated.

Indian diplomacy should be allowed a free hand and politicians should step aside.
---------------

This is an unhealthy approach, and expecting Indian courts to be constructive at the bidding of such national interests, rather national compulsions, is exactly what makes India is a soft state.

Don't think diplomats in any developed nation have such a leeway.

The comparison to an Indian national in a Middle-East national water is absurd. The Indian law would have jurisdiction here even if the fishermen were Sinhala or Pakistani.

The average Joe the westerner and Raju the gentleman are quite freindly at present. A soft state response would create affinity between corrupt elites at the expense of friendly disposition of common man of both sides.

that Bhadrakumar should be sacked from all diplomatic duties because neither he regards Indian judiciary nor he can sell/take care of Indian interests. All he cares for is the interests of others. Whatever Italy did is completely wrong even diplomatically (after giving written assurances). If the wanted to prove that detection of Italian guards by India was wrong then they should have taken another route to deal with this. In fact by doing this they wil only invite international criticism. No sensible and democratic person/nation will/can accept this action of Italy.

The Italians have proved that theyd are no.one cheats. That the marines would not return to India after creating confidence trick is preconceived. They should pay the price for it. The "ambassador" who cheats and deliberately so does deserve a jail sentence in India and should lose the diplomatic immunity. The immunity is only for gentlemen and ladies who have honesty of purpose, not for those who deliberately lie, cheat and show utter disrespect to our judiciary.

its a conspiracy...

Its a clever conspiracy to cover-up the Agustawestland issue. Both the govts are hostile to each other now, so they got the excuse to bury down the scam which could unearth dirty facts of both the countries..
Good game plan and acted by both the state players and we the people of India seething with anger for poor marines who has nothing to do with it....
