Biased Thinking
by Reader on Mar 13, 2013 07:35 PM

Italian diplomat went back on his word and Mr. Bhadrakumar wants the government to pursue a diplomatic solution. Skewed thinking from Bhadrakumar if at all he put any thought. He has unfairly trashed every arm of government except the diplomats. This is a murder case, hope Bhadrakumar wakes up and sees it that way.

Otherwise, they can be in jail for ever in India. Send an email to inform the court verdict when it is available. They may come if they are still alive!!

First of all, this is an exaggeration. Secondly, don't Indians face the same thing in India ? So why should it be different for Italians who have murdered Indian citizens ? And if that is so, why did they give false assurance in the first place ? They should have contested Indian jurisdiction over the case right in the begining.

I expected the family loyalists would fall over each other in their haste to give this incident a grotesque spin. The Italians would become saints and the Kerala government, the sinners and the dead fisherman would become pirates by the time these spin doctors rest their case. What a shame. No wonder india became a laughing stock among the diplomatic circles thanks to ambassadors and diplomats like Bhadrakumar who are always happy to oblige opponents with self goals.

What a poor argument...
by concerned citizen on Mar 13, 2013 07:11 PM  | Hide replies

The author's stance on the Italian marines crisis is unbelievable. I did not expect this from a senior diplomat.

The offence happened in the sea near the coast of India. The jurisdiction of trial is under dispute. The marines have been apprehended and are in the custody of the Indians. This is exactly what any nation would have done. If you dont like the legal system of India, who asked you to commit a crime against Indians. You could have done it elsewhere.

There is little place for terms like: "handled the situation well", "good relations", "whip up sentiments" etc.

They committed a crime against our citizens and hence need to face our law. If they could convince our courts that the trial needs to be held elsewhere, they could have done so. Nobody is denying them a fair trial. They were free to convince our independent judiciary and take the trial elsewhere.

Instead they have played the role of a cheap con-nation. They misused the generosity and fairness of the Indian judiciary and government. They have done a betrayal which is unprecedented.

Forever, it would be etched on the minds of the Indians that the Italians have done the greatest betrayal.

Any other country or even Indian government would have gone berserk by now.

The current UPA govt with the likes of Manmohan Singh, Sonia Gandhi and Salman Khurshid are completely unfit to handle such situations. They are only looking to take token measures and give the case a quite burial.

Diplomats, RAW, Politicians compete to be slaves of the external powers. A lot of diplomats get their kids admitted into phoren universities, stash cash outside India and send everything abroad.

Questionable argument...
by concerned citizen on Mar 13, 2013 07:08 PM

Even if the incident happened in waters beyond the territorial waters of India, does it mean that India has no jurisdiction over the vessel and its crew ?

We know that 55& of the world's merchant shipping fleet is registered in countries called as: "Ports of convenience", i.e. very small islands or coastal zones. Some of these countries are: Liberia, Panama, Cayman Islands, Malta etc.

It is anybody's guess what kind of legal system such countries have. If a crime happens, does the govt of these states have exclusive jurisdiction to prosecute and punish the wrongdoers ?

Rubbish.

Italy used extreme pressure to save their marines and they succeeded, thanks to our bumbling system.

this episode reminds me of a story...

two nursery kids going home from school tells parents that they are not going back to school from tommorrow onwards and the irresponsible parents are agreeing and informed school that their kids are no more going to school. now headmaster and school is crying to parents to send their children to school..... really funny and making mockery of india and indian judiciary...

Thanks Mr Kumar for putting facts as they are for the readers who are more biased than informed. It is in the habit of Congress to allow thing to deteriorate before action is taken. The action of an over active CM in Kerala & no action by an ever silent PM has caused this embarrassment to nation & needless bitterness with a friendly nation
