Any outfit with 'PROGRESSIVE' in their name, tend to be most regressive. The difference is that they promote their own brand of bigotry as progress. If Patriarchy is the reason for rape, then tell me why, the matriarchal Kerala is leading the rape figures?
Mrs. Krishnan's points are right to much extent. India has always witnessed oppresion towards weaker section and in our country" women" belong to a weaker section who need reservation, qouta, special allowances and many such support which is only equivalent to a weak or handicapped individual. Hence controlling this weaker section has almost become a birth right. That's why we blame a raped woman doubt her integrity and isolate her in a way that she will never stand up. Thats the reason any raped girl's or woman's identity is not disclosed to avoid the above situations. How far this is logical. Whereas the man's (criminal) identity is disclosed even with a photo on the news media. How many times in India such men are condemned and isolated throuhout his life or even years after the incident? Everyone forgets him. How many times in India such girls are accepted in the family and how many boys are ready to marry such girls/women ? We have a society where people are mentally handicapped. Hence a social reform is the only solution. No law or policing can reduce this. Above all how many mothers can disown her son for committing such crime or accept the responsibility of that affected girl? I'm sure its also the diffect of that person's upbringing where a mother has the biggest role. A mother is a woman, how she forgets that ?

Kabeer, I have a lot of respect for both your depth of knowledge on various issues and analytical abilities.
However, alas, I cannot agree with your hypothesis, that crime is a class phenomenon.
I believe this was a popular belief in 19th century Victorian England and the parts of the globe controlled by the Empire, with much hand wringing about the criminal classes. However, I do believe the theory has been subsequently debunked by scientific study.
Further, apart from the basic generalization that poverty leads to crime, there is a secondary generalization about crime itself, because the fictional character 'Jean Valjean' stealing a loaf of bread (for which he gets five years in the galleys) is also a crime and what Bitti Mohanty did is also a crime. The present discussion is specifically about the latter crime, wherein, the chances of class driven acts are even lesser, unless backed up by the hypotheses that fractured families & poverty outside makes jail a lesser deterrent.
When so much is being talked about rape, one point anybody failed to note was that, discussing solution for rape in isolation is a futile exercise. Rape is also a crime just like any other crime. If the rate of crime in a country is comparatively more, among all other crimes committed in that country, rape is also another crime goes equally well with all other crimes. There are stringent laws for committing murder but murders are going on. When we have a good society, we will have less crimes and less rape. When we have a bad society, there will be more crimes and more rapes.
