Indian culture (Indian subcontinent - including Pakistan and bangladesh) is obviously anti-women. Let us not try to hide this fact. Indians always want a male child, for that they even kill the girls before their birth. Also, it is only in India subcontinent that women are killed by their own parents for marrying the persons whom they love.

Bog should not comments , WB is another example. No progress only Big big talk.....People of WB now leaving Bengal ....like NANO gone
In the West men and women are engaged in a lot of physical and mental extracurricular activities like sports, music etc. India needs the same kind of dynamism in its culture. Indian Classical Music, singing songs or playing some instrument, and playing some sports and indulging in more self-improvement skill development should be made compulsory for all. Only a cultural renaissance can occupy the mind productively. Poverty is not just about money, it is also about cultural decadence.

Wrong. The statistics dont tell you the full story. The reason number per 10000 is higher because of far greater REPORTING AND CONVICTION RATES than India and other such countries.

Is the author justifying or trying to find a reason? After so much of emotional acts at India Gate etc., somebody is trying to be rational to prevent it in future.
There seems to be an underlying assumption that rape is a sexual act. At bottom,it is the exercise of control. It is the raw exercise of power in its purest, most degrading form. Murder, as happened here, is the ultimate, God-like exercise of control. Here we had slum residents with little areas of their life under their own control. Further,is it even possible to compare rape rates among countries? There are insurmountable counting problems, not the least of which is reporting. I find it hard to believe, as posited by the author, that US rape rate exceeds South Africa's generally considered the world "leader." The author also fails to mention that the rape rate in the US is less than 1/2 of what is was just 10 years ago when "W" was President. According to the UN, Nationsmasters and the CIA there are both poorly developed nations and highly developed nations with both higher and lower rape rates than the US. Finally, the author fails to note that many,if not most rapists know their victim making the idea of dehumanization of women the "cause" highly suspect. The solution is to find meaningful ways to empower people so they won't resort to this means of exerting power. How do we effect that? I don't know, but we can look at countries with low rates and see what they do.
I don't think there is any meaningful way to compare rape rates among countries to to vastly varying reporting rates. 2MM rapes per year in the US? That's a rate higher than South Africa, generally considered the world leader in this crime. But the true weakness of this, and other "analyses" of the problem is the false assumption that rape is a sexual act. It is the act of controlling another person done by a person who otherwise has no control. Is is a raw exercise of power. The situation at issue is a perfect example; slum residents exercising control over a middle class couple. There appears also be an element of envy here. I do agree that development does lead to less control over one's life and the relation posited may be valid, though not for the precise stated reasons. It is arguable that objectification of women can lend to one's devaluing, dehumanizing them and viewing them as a proper subject to control. But what about the fact that many, if not most rapists know their victims? It is extraordinarily difficult to dehumanize a person you know. Why did the Chinese order in rural troops to put down an urban rebellion? It was a said that the best way to be safe from the killer Ted Bundy was to have him know you personally. As I suggested, this is a complex issue questionably tractable.
