While Gandhi was a great leader, who could do magic with his words and actions and still recognized by world leaders for his ability to move masses, but by all account he was not a God and should not be treated like that.
Like so many other great leaders he had his own shortcomings and we should behave maturely to accept that. What he was and he was not, will never come out because for most part there are no evidences, plus even the things which can prove either way, are beyond access due to our truth suppressing policy, which gives government right to keep anything hidden from public access naming any national security issue.
But bottom line, whether he was bi-sexual or not, he was still a great leader. And while I personally do not believe that he was the main reason for our freedom, he still played a major role in the whole process, good or bad.

He was not even that good with words, there were other leaders like Netaji who were born leaders and orators.. this man was of average IQ and average-low leadership skills, not brilliant with high intelligence like Jinnah or Netaji.
But he was clever enough to have utilized the support of some of the richest people in India back then - Jamnalal bajaj and Motilal nehru - to support his stranglehold over congzxss and guide it in his own direction.

when god himself is caricatured, who the hell is this gandhi to get a royal treatment!!!!!
I am totally opposed to the idea of banning books or other works of art. I may or may not subscribe to a particular idea. I may or may not support a particular thought. I may or may not enjoy a work of art. But that does not give me the right to ban a book or a painting or a cartoon etc - as has been done in the case of Salman Rushdie, Taslima Nasreen, Maqbool Fida Hussain, Kurt Westergaard (the Danish cartoonist who drew a cartoon of Prophet Muhammad), or now this book by Lelyveld.
The author has a point when he says that the allegations are made by people who haven't even read the book. It appears to be a marketing gimmick by the publishers to sell a book no one would even have heard of otherwise

First know whom you are talking about you m0ron..
Lelyveld is not some third rate filth like Teesta or Brzqa to write w/o factual basis..
He is a pulitzer prize winning journo from a distinguished family that worked tirelessly against RACISM their entire lives - at great risk to their personal well being.
Degrading them to mere sensationalists like Indian journos reeks of your own bias and prejudice.
We must respect the father of our nation, doing disrespect we are showing our Chadee mentality. The bak bak like gutter mentality people must stop immediately and condemned by all.
If a book is banned, its clandestine sales will increase.Aubrey Menon's "Rama retold",Swami Agehananda's "Ochre robe" were two books with innocuous themes of which only a few copies would have sold, but for the ban imposed by the government.Kavya Viswanathan's "Opal Mehta" did not sell much, until the author was accused of plagiarism and publishers withdrew it from the shops.Roadside shops made a roaring business.
