Indians will never learn
by Rajendra Nayak on Mar 17, 2011 05:48 PM

The scientists and politicians who speak from Mumbai and New Delhifor nuclear plants do not want nuclear plant at Shivaji Park,Dadar nor at Pragiti Maidan, New Delhi but far far away so that villagers and rural folks are exposed. But every body will say it is the best, cheapest and cleanest source of energy. What about accidents the world has witnessed so far? In India people will die like rats and ants.
Everything is kept a secret under the Atomic Energy Act. That is why people have no trust.

The High cost of Nuclear Power
by ravi prakash on Mar 17, 2011 05:32 PM

Nuclear Power is not cheap in any way. Firstly, Uranium and Plutonium as the fuel for the Nuclear power has to be imported. Once the Nuclear Program is underway then India is permanently dependent on the already rich nuclear producers. Secondly, nuclear power generation technology has been developed mainly by France, the USA , Britain and Canada. This means that for all our needs related to sourcing the appropriate equipment, we are completely dependent on these countries.
The cost of safety of plant, fuel, personnel and the sorrounding area is the highest. This means that an enormous amount of money has to be spent in building the supporting infrastructure of waste disposal, health care needs, fuel storage and round the clock vigilance and control systems, training and upgrading people to renovate, operate and maintain and dispose old and worn out parts in a safe manner.
India's record in the handling of Nuclear energy is still way below the world standards of safety. The author has already listed some of the blunders.A few more of such blunders can be cited:
Spent Plutonium was sold to an ignorant scrap dealer in New delhi, the poor person suffered burn injuries.
In the BARC itself, some employee played a prank by stealing bottles of heavy water and these were discovered later.
It is better that we do not import these plants but upgrade our existing facilities to generate power building safety features ourselves.

N power is the only solution to world energy problem till we find other cheaper modes, natural resources are limited, the world progress cannot be halted, as such to think in negative term is not humanity. We can only take pre cautions, cannot stop progress.

We have many other alternatives also - like, all the energy we spend daily e.g walking, shouting etc. is a waste. If we can store those mechanical & sound energy by any means, that would be great.

Also, we can install solar plants in Satelites and store them chemically and get back on earth on regular(say weekly) basis.
