Commendable work done by Japan, they proved how to challenge nature by having such a efficient disaster management, not like india which depends upon mercy of colorful gods....

God bless Japan and Japanese!!!!

NUCLEAR PLANT AND MMS
by jatin mehra on Mar 12, 2011 11:56 PM  | Hide replies

I feel its high time now atleast our UPA govt headed by MMS wakes up reconsiders the decision to set up massive nuclear power plants. The Japanese must have taken maximum possible precautions in building there nuclear plants and see the results. These things can happen any where and consequences in India could be un thinkable. Pls MMS wake up and dont make it a prestige issue for the sake of nation

You are right. The West and Japanese have higher standards of safety. They also have elaborate procedures for handling such events, which we Indians do not have and do not attach much importance to. Imagine how our politicians, bureaucrats and scientists would have dealt with a similar situation. They would take a week to declare an emergency.

Yes. Nuclear energy comes with high risks. India as a country with huge population all across the country should be very careful about adopting this technology in a massive scale.

Every country will be watching closely and learning lessons from this incident in Japan. Are our Indian Politicians, Bureaucrats and Technocrats also doing the same?

Very serious matter indeed.

that there is no God... I mean first these poor japanese got nuked by our big boss twice... then also, they built their country with hard work and dedication, but still there is no fairness to them even by nature, they got screwed over by nature too...... gives me only two options.. either God hates japanese, or he doesn't exists...

Before getting nuked the Japanese attacked USA at pearl harbour. It attacked and performed untold atrocities on the Chinese, captured all of Asia and wanted to invade India with the designs of capturing INDIA to enslave India in place of British. Altough they didnot suceed Japanese did try. Japanese along with hitler formed axis and drafted a memerandum to rule the world
The pasting they got from USA was justified including the nuke bomb
There is a GOd and he punishes people for their sins. Earler Japanese ate whales now whale are eating Japanase

Nuclear Power
by Ashok on Mar 12, 2011 11:17 PM  | Hide replies

We should not go for power generation from nuclear reactors. First of all , it is not cheap power. Then there is always danger of radiation and accidents which can create havoc with the health of the people. The Western countries are interested in getting big business from India by selling their expensive reactors and our government seems to be interested in helping the rich nations.

no actually it is not fully true.as the growing demand of our country has to fulfill quickly and effectvely.the hydroelectric power has limited power capacity. Thermal power also has same problem.then solar & wind power has installation capacity probleam
so The option is only necular power though it has some danger but it can provide undistrubed power for century.

the alternate you propose is? The dangers and risks are there in all the current options. Solar is not yet breaking even. Other not yet practical for base load. As to the cost of nuclear power, a big part of the cost is insurance and regulatory - caused by the ignorant scaremongering as evidenced in this forum.

r u head of any nuclear plant in India or out side India. Why do u support Nuclear power generation. Solar is best alternate but coslty. Wind mills can be considered but not.. why? why the govt is more intrested towards deals with other countries.. it means more corruption. The thing is we should respect the nature. by doing all this we are not.. THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL is one movie which has the all answers to each human on this earth.

wind mills for base power load? I am afraid that this isn't possible.
As to the govt being interested in deals and kickbacks, that is a separate issue. We need to tackle that. Why blame nuclear plats for that? There's corruption in defence deals. Do we stop these deals or do we try and eliminate the corruption? Let's not throw away the baby with the bath water.

Why cant wind mills suffice base power load? The need is to invest in R&D of energy storage and its distribution. Wind and Solar has much larger potential than we can tap. In a country where simple chemical factory leakage can kill thousands, Nuclear plant leakage would be a disaster. In recent N-Deal most of the sites identified for N-plant installation are coastal and all are practically under threat of Tsunamis and Earthquakes.

perhaps you are mixing your desire of what should happen with what actually is. We cant use wind mills for base power load because by definition base power source needs to be a stable large source that is available through out the year.
This is the current reality. I am not saying it can't change in the future. It can. But as things are today, it isn't.

Things wont change unless people press govts for it. With proper storage and distribution mechanism wind alone can suffice base power load. You need a grid for it with integrated distribution system and storage.

Why to wait for becoming Solar break even? Cant we invest in R&D to make it break even? It is a loose statement to call others not yet practical for base load, but ironically India produces more power from renewable sources (hydro excluded) than Nuclear Power. Scaremongering is not ignorant, it is for real and that is already seen in Japan. Soon you'll hear about Caesium contamination of water bodies in Fukushimo region and practically water will be not potable for many days. After meltdown these plants will take few years to attain normal operation.

a lot of companies and schools are doing R&D to advance the technology. But we are not there yet. One problem people are not weaning off is the explicit and implicit subsidy on petroleum and coal based power. To make it fair, a huge pollution cost should be added to their prices.
And the last time i checked there hasn't been a fallout in Fukushimo yet.

Check the statement of Japanese PM, they confirmed nuclear meltdown and leakage from Fukushimo Plant-1. However radiation level has dropped substantially still the region's water bodies may have radioactive caesium for many days.

Where did I advocated Thermal plant over Nuclear? Nuclear energy sector is in its nascent stage compared to Thermal and more accidents in Nuclear plants would change the scenario.

the only fair way to decide this is (1) ignore noise and scaremongering (2) compare financial cost, pollution cost and life cost on a gigawatt basis.
As things stand today, coal based plants are the only ones that provide the base load power. Once you add the pollution surcharge due to carbon emissions and flyash, and also add insurance/regulatory costs to make it apple to apple comparison with nuclear power, you will see that cost wise they are similar. Now add the number of deaths in the last 50 years due pollutions, coal mining and compare that with deaths due to nuclear plants, you will see that this is a slam dunk case. Thermal plants are evil.

It is one thing to argue for/against technilogies but engineering is not about faith. All technologies grow to become safe, economical, reliable, etc. Unfortunately, Indians are rarely involved in any development. They can only argue for/against as here. No need to get emotional. As an engineer, I can say, we are lucky to have alternatives. All alternatives are good. Only time will tell how it progresses. Any setbacks further boost research and development. All existing technologies developed slowly from imperfection to perfection. many people died perfecting the steam boilers and air planes. today, however, we do have reliable boilers and airplanes. Same can be said for wind and solar power. They too have their uses and shall develop. No case for either/or this/that. Again Indians can only argue emotionally for/against various issues. But technology develops all the same.

Quit scaremongering.
yes, nuclear plants "can" kill. Meanwhile, thermal power plants kill more people each month than nuclear plats have killed over the entire history. Have you ever visited an area near a thermal plant? The fly ash kills multiple generations in one shot. The pollution caused by them also kills uncountable many. And don't even get started on the associated coal mining industry that kills 1000s each year.
But don't bother. Let's not let facts get in the way of scaremongering.
