Nikki Haley is an embarassment

She is an evangelical fundamentalist. So is Bobby Jindal. She is a Republican, the party of the Confederacy. I don't see why Indians should be proud of her.

These people left their Indian religions voluntarily. Why do we still consider them as Indian?

I am already someone, thanks.
I am sure she is a wonderful woman personally - but her politics and political life is pretty crazy.
We should not be awarding crazy politicians, that is all.

What is their positive contribution to India? They prospered. Good. How are they elevating India? I find a majority of them run down their own country. They would do lip service to India. They are no doubt glad that they are away from India. Okay, India is good for occasional visits. Awful roads. Most unhygienic people. Oh! my God! What sort of a crowd! Thank God! We have become American citizens. As for culture, we in America have absorbed and followed the Indian culture much better than they do in their own country. As a matter of fact, we can teach a lesson or two on this to them. It is also a haven for terrorists and Christian and Islamic culture. The natives have forgotten their roots. The best Indian media persons are in the States. Some of the magazines are better than what do they have in India. The Thendral Tamil magazine is much better than the magazines in Tamilnadu. The other weeklies covering Asia and in particular India turn out much better stuff than Indian magazines barring one or two. Oh! I left India 20 years ago, and my family and I have become American citizens. My daughter intends to marry that American enjoying Bajji and Dosa in Shree Restaurant. No desire to go back to that polluted and corrupt country. As for temples, all the important Hindu Gods also seem to have deserted India and shifted their residences to New York, Pittsburgh and Chicago. Okay. They are honouring us. We condescend to accept the honour bestowed on us. Good bye.

More or less everyone of us is writing about achievements of Indians
abroad and is a matter of heartening being Indians. It would be interesting if we know how Chinese citizens are faring in different
fields in comparison to Indians. Beating China abroad will be a real
achievement.

The Indians command more respect than Chinese. The Chinese are desperate in coming to USA and once they settle down in USA shudder at the thought of returning to their blessed country.

INDIAN WHO????
by BHARATIYA INDIAN on Jun 25, 2011 07:25 PM  | Hide replies

Who is an Indian - an Indian Passport Holder/ an Indian Citizen/ or a person with Indian blood through her/ his parental lineage??

When we count Indian Nobel Prize winners, we count Dr. Khurana as Indian, though he was not Indian Citizen, same with Dr. Amratya Sen, who is not an Indian Passport Holder. We also counted Mother Teresa as Indian although she was European in origin.
Let's first decide WHO IS AN INDIAN, before bestowing awards on them. I feel an Indian living abroad but having Indian passport should be honored with such awards, rather than those who have renounced their Indian citizenship just to graze in greener pastures to earn more money.
Kudos to persons like L N Mittal who are still proud of their Indian passports.

Re: INDIAN WHO????

Do not go by the tangible aspects to determine who is an Indian. LN Mittal is a billionaire who probably can create his own opportunities just by a wave of his hand. While I respect his struggle to get where he is today and the fact that he still holds an Indian passport, those are not the metrics by which one's Indianness can be measured. Most people have to work very very hard to create opportunities and in order to create such opportunities and seek progress, one has to be a pragmatist. Most Indians are Indians at heart; I am not sure about Mrs.Haley, but many Indians in the Indian diaspora are big contributors in presenting a positive face of India at the global level and they're proud of their Indian heritage. Passport is just a document for travel purposes. It can be changed anytime. The utility value, possible opportunities for personal progress are paramount in the mind of an Indian who seeks a passport of the country which is his "karmabhoomi." That doesn't take away his/her passion for "dharmabhoomi." How well do you know why Mittal still has his Indian passport--could it be becuase he buys large plots of agri-land, which is prohibited for a person of Indian origin with a foreign passport? My friend, small people have to make rational choices to make life easy while still feeling very very INDIAN inside.

Saddened by India's medal poverty in Olymics,L N Mittal started the Mittal Champions Trust and funded it from his side.Because, performance in Olympics reflects the sporting power of a nation.

Abhinav Bindra was the first beneficiary of Mittal Champions Trust.

Now this trust sponsors 35 leading sports personalities of the country and Mittal is funding them so that India can have an honourable medal haul in London ,2012.

This is example of patriotism. It is easy to criticise fellow achievers.Rather we should achieve for the country as well.

Why is the award is to be always given to a person based in America ?

There are lot of great Indians in Singapore,Japan,Norway,Mauritius,Trinidad,Fiji,England, etc, etc.

Is it to promote America ? Or sell rediff in the name of America ?

Does the awardee feel honoured or rediff feels honoured by giving or taking the award?
