No wonder when human beings fade away their souls keep wandering in the universe and this period is infinite since the path may not be straight line as it is in the case of Light
If the star is 640 light years away from earth and if it going to explode this year then how can we see the explosion. The visual of the explosion will only reach the earth after 640 years. Moreover if the light emerged from this explosion remains visible over the earth for a few weeks then we would be able to save several Million Mega Watt of Power needed to power the earth during night time. Because no artificial power will be needed at night to lit the earth.

am not a well renound astrologer.. infact i am not an astrologer at all.. bt one thing i know is that what we predict about this star is an image of how it looked about 640 Light years ago... :) hence if scientists are saying that in 2011 this star will explode then i guess, it already has exploded .. and its just that this year we might be able to c the same ... correct me if i am wrong :P

Sir Pritam Roy's observation is verymuch correct. However your prediction to come true will mean that Betelgeuse the red giant must have already exploded and would have become supernova 640 years beack. We have to wait and watch whether we will be luckey to watch the supernova of Betelgeuse or our future generations who will be there to watch this supernova exactly 640 years from now. Ramamurthy

Remember we are living in 4 dimensional space-time.So time is chaging from one place to another.Assuming in earth time frame the star is already gone through a supernova now, the light will truly take 640 years to reach us.However satellites above earths are actually measuring lot of other parameters like x-rays,gamma rays etc which are more important in predicting supernova than visible lights.Good discussion.

The scintists are not sure if it has exploded or not because present day visuals are based on changes in the last couple of decades. It is these signs that show Betelgeuse is ready to explode. The minute we see that we know for sure it exploded 640 years ago.Any rays that are right now being received are still pre supernova.
may be a spectacular event to unfold in the heavens of night sky cosmic phenomenon - for all to see supernova when betelgeuse blows itself into oblivion -
indeed the star is 640 light years away, it is possible that this star does not exist today and we would be seeing something with our eyes that happened 640 years back.

but how could you know that it happened 640 light years ago???? what valid theory is applicable here....believe nothing will happen
