This article would stand out if you make a collection of the most ridiculous articles on Rediff. Doesn't the author or the editor have any clue of astrophysics? How and why are they allowed to publish any stuff? Please go to kindergarden and learn your abc's of science first!

You cannot expect either the author or the editor to have knowledge on astrophysics as this article was not originally authored by any of them. They just copied and pasted (as they always do when it come to international news) from UK newspaper daily mail. Atleast they were honest about it by mentioning the source in their article
Either I am missing something or the article is just stupid! If we are going to see it in 2012, then Supernova actually happened around 640 years ago! But, the article does not sound that way!
If Super Nova is going to happen in 2012, then Earthlings will see it 640 years later!
However, this statement is interesting:
"The explosion will be so bright that even though the star in the Orion constellation is 640 light-years away, it will still turn night into day and appear like there are two suns in the sky for a few weeks, the Daily Mail reported."
How can we see it in 2012 if it is 640 light years away! Hmm...!

Its mentioned that the event might occur in 2012 and its not mentioned when exactly the denizens of the planet will be able to see it....

I think you are correct....Rediff got us all confused but they have got it right! Rediff wins this time! But anyways, they probably copied this article from somewehere else!

arre its happened 640 yrs ago.. but we dont know na wht happened 640 yrs ago.. so we r just waiting for the light to reach us....

we r not sure if u have read the article properly... just guessing from our knowledge of stars
if it can be seen anytime from now to 1 million years, now if by logic the earth sees it after 640 yrs and the star is 640 light years away then the star has not yet exploded.anyway scientific articles on astronomy are full of articles about black holes and dying stars.there are no scientific studies about new stars or suns being born.

dear friend....
There are studies for new & to be born stars also... But what makes black holes more talked about is that, the laws of physics (known till date) fail inside the black hole... Too much unknown, hence too much interesting....

then Chennai will be a BIKARI country without India
before Betelgeuse explodes in supernova. Cosmic calenders are at much higher scale than human calenders. This story presentation smacks of a tabloid article. Tomorrow, rdf will publish a story of aliens from a planet of Betelgeuse taking over earth in 2012.

Its a 640 years Stale news of terestrial happening which is seen now. You can understand from the history when Tamerlane conquered Asia 1372 AD. Some thing happened at that time and the news via light singals reaching now !!

When the supernova explosion is due in 0 to million years, 640 years is non-factor.

The news reporting is wrong. if its going to happen then we wont see in this life time as it would take minimum 640 years for light to reach us 2651 AD or arouind !!

dear friend, Scientists have known that "it is going to happen" by seeing its light only, which is coming from 640 light years away. Actually, it might have happened 640/639 yrs ago. Scientists have not yet invented any mean of getting information, in which the information will travel greater than the speed of light. Hence whatever is seen today in universe is actually more or less of past......
Distance scale is 640 light years which means the light seen would have started 640 Earth years ago in time. Nothing to worry about dooms day or any illeffect . Only one effect I can foresee, if it happens is the disturbance in bio rythem of animals for 2 weeks and if earth receives, enough heat and light then some changes in polar ice which might create some trouble if at all.
