Yes. The heading here is bad. It implies certainty. Whereas, the first line is more accurate. It uses the word "Could".

Very good point! Going with this logic, presumably explosion already took place then instead of waiting to find it out, If we can send a space shuttle which can travel faster than light then we may be able to find out much earlier.

Is it so? Other wise tell me how rediff can publish such an article? This happens beacise we think that what ever come from wester world is correct! we, precisly our jurnalist are suffering from slavery mentality. This goes to such an extent that even our sicetist loss thier confidence to annoce about find of water on Moon! Oh my counrty men come out of slavery!
morning when i read this i knew it was a hoax, and it turned out to be one indeed. people, pls read thru some genuine science and astronomy sites (which i did) who have clarified about the status of this star. yes it will explode but not in another 1000 yrs. How could rediff fall for such hoax without proper verification.

As the star is 640 light years away from earth and we see that event in 2012 so is it that the explosion took place 640 light years ago? if it is then what changes we noticed during observing the Betelgeuse?

Mr naveen .one light year means ,distance travelled by light in one year(3lakh km/s). so how it become AD1372?????
When it is saying we will see it in 2012 & star is at 640 light years away. Means it is already happend 639 years ago.we will come to know in 2012.When this light will raech us after640 years how rediff came to know it is happend? are they astrologer or they got evidence that it is happnd before 639years ago.
It is the politicians in the scientists prompting this kind of articles. They don't know the reason of the flood in Australia, Brazil etc. caused this year and still continuing and can calculated and predict billion years of light and its arrival with accuracy.
