American health care is worst
by sssyy on Apr 21, 2011 04:09 AM

I had personal experiences with US health care system. At one time, I went to check cholesterol. The nurse in training took my blood. It was like pricking an animal. The lady pushed the needle as if my body is made of some metal. The lady who went before me was crying when she came out. This may be a minor incident.

But, there are real problems with regards to insurance. I had to remove a molar cyst 2 years back. The primary health care physician referred to a dentist. The dentist after taking the x-ray said that it is partly a medical condition also, but my medical insurance will not be taken by them. So, I have to consult another dentist (around 40 miles from my home). Finally, surgery was conducted after waiting for 2 months. The pain was terrible, both physical and mental.

In US, if you look at the salary range for doctors, it is between $100k (starting)-1.7 million. No wonder why all these Indian MBBS holders pack their bags to US and write the qualifying exam (USMLE). If you are planning to do masters or Ph.D., don't do it. It is a waste. There are no jobs for them. The jobs that are available are postdoc jobs with salary ranging from $35k-$42k. Compare that to a doctor, it is just peanuts.

My point is that after getting these fat salaries, the health of the people are not improving. It is getting worse and worse.

I believe the correct interpretation od Obama statement was that his governament work towards making medical treatment affordable with in the country so that people don't need to look outside. There is nothing wrong with this statement.

Criticism of US healthcare system
by techno geek on Apr 21, 2011 03:46 AM  | Hide replies

The insurance companies have screwed up the healthcare system in US. The problem is that you don't get a fricken appointment for months.

I was in India and I got my eyes checked , teeth filled up and visited my aunt in another hospital in a span of 4 hours without any appointment.

techno geek - the top 1 to 5% of the people in USA can get the same treatment in USA as you got in India. The question is the care given to bottom 95% of Indians comparable to that given to bottom 95% Americans.
In terms of standard of living and quality of care?

America is better
by techno geek on Apr 21, 2011 03:41 AM  | Hide replies

What I found is that Indian doctors don't lack knowledge. They lack commitment and professionalism. They sign up for too many patients and can not do justice to everyone of the patients. They give up too soon on complicated cases.

The US healthcare system (if you can afford) is THE best in the world.

I havbe many examples but I will share one:
I visited a dentist in US: She showed me drilling X rays every 10 mins. Professionally explained the procedure and made sure I want getting hurt during or after the procedure.

I went to an Indian dentist in India after that, he mecilessly drilled my tooth to the point I had to ask him to stop. He said "some pain will be there." No x rays no explaination of what he was doing. Two days later I had to reverse the procedure and get another treatment. He knew what he was doing. He had good knowledge but he was careless in handling the matter.

This is not an isolated problem. I have many examples like this.

Its not whether you can do the job. Its about how you do it.

IN U.S. HEALTHCARE EVERYBODY IS MAKING MONEY BY TAKING XRAY EVERY 10 MIN HE IS MAKING MONEY FROM CO PAY AS WELL AS FROM THE INSURANCE COMPANY TOO. WHERE IS IN INDIA THERE ARE TOO MANY GOOD DOCTORS IN INDIA... IN THE HEALTHCARE INDIA IS THE WORLD LEADER SO MANY WORLD BEST DOCTORS ARE AVAILABLE IN INDIA. GOOD KNOWLEDGE AS WELL AS GOOD PROFESSIONALS ARE THERE IN INDIA. THATS WHY WE ARE NOW IN POSITION OF RULING THE WORLD MY FRIEND. IF YOU WORK IN U.S. ITS BECAUSE OF YOUR KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS RIGHT???? SO PLEASE PLEASE DON'T SAY THAT.....

Health care Quality in US
by G Krishnan on Apr 21, 2011 03:36 AM  | Hide replies

My wife suffers from uevetis, an eye ailment which can at best be controlled but not cured. Currently We are in Us staying in SF. Recently my wife's eyes turned red and we wanted an Uevetis expert to see her eyes. To our consternation only two experts are here in SF for this and even visiting Stanford medical centre we could not meet the expert. Later we met him at the California University and he said there was no nnew incursion but about the old scars if any development is there only the Indian doctor who attends her can say. Neither in the facilities nor in the quality of the doctors examination we could discern any higher quality compared to what we get in Mumbai or at Shankar Netralaya, Chennai. Only we spent US$600/- for this examination which we would not have spent for 15 such examinations including flight tickets from Mumbai to Chennai. That being the state of affairs the statement of US president is only a tall claim.

Healthcare
by Venkatachalam iyer on Apr 21, 2011 03:21 AM  | Hide replies

There was absolutely no need to take objection to Obama's remarks. He has only condemned the American healthcare system which is no doubt rotten and cannot be depended upon, particularly, in times of emergency. The American healthcare system is very costly and least affordable, especially, for the middle class. In comparison, the Indian healthcare system is much cheaper; The Indian healthcare system does not have a cumbersome procedure as in US. The doctors in India are quick and correct in diagnosis and are not money oriented as in US. The doctors in India are not as fussy as their American counterparts. The doctors in US are always worried about legal complications and implications before touching a patient. Therefore, Obama is right. He has paid compliments to Indian healthcare system which as he says is much cheaper than in America without sacrificing quality. There is nothing wrong in his statement. Americans need to improve.

At least in Safdarjung Hospital, AIIMS, New Delhi, and the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, the poor are taken care of. I have seen this myself. In Hyderabad, there is an eye hospital which treats poor patients without demanding a paisa from them. Cataract operations are performed free of cost to the poor.It is not the case in US. Even in this age, there are doctors, very capable and considerate, who charge just Rs.10/- for consultation. They also give freely the samples given to them by the Medical Representatives. India is overpopulated. But still they try to maintain hygiene as far as possible in the circumstances. There may be some exceptions. Some greedy doctors are there no doubt. There is no need to go to them.It is not the case in US. The doctors there fleece you for even relatively minor ailments. We do not get treatment in time in US. Let us not be carried away by the looks and appearances. It is time that the medical community in USA tries to emulate the Indian example. Obama deserves kudos. Not insults.
