As long as Indian people dont encourage Health insurance Companies (ex BCBS,United Health care) treatment in india will be affordable. Once Insurance companies dominate in India(for which they are trying hard now) treatment will become more expensive than US in India with Low quality.
So better India dont encourage Health insurance companies
somehow we Indians think that we have the cheap, but the best health care system in the world. Unfortunately, how many people can afford to get treatment in of the so called world-class hospitals ?? may be 5-10 % of the population ? how many of us can pay, say 2-3 lakhs for a heart surgery without taking loans ?? Its cheap for Americans, not for us.
What President Obama really could have meant is that US citizens wouldn't have to travel to other countries because of unfordable treatment in US as his govt is working towards making treatment in US affordable and accessible to all there (Quality Healthcare in US is extremely expensive and not accessible to all).
Obviously Healthcare in India is Cheap compared to US because of the difference in Currency equations - But that doesn't mean that we have 'cheap' or low quality healthcare. We too have some of the best hospitals and doctors here.
In the coming days, Indian healthcare will be very good and India will be a preferred destination for world class healthcare.

Amazing how what you have explained is lost on so many people. I was watching Times Now a few hours back which was screaming " India enraged by Obama's remarks" and I was thinking, either these journos are really stupid to miss the whole currency angle or really desperate to keep the 24 hr news cycle going with idiotic stories like these.

Obama is candid in his views. He does not run away from the problems as the Indian PM does. He confronts them in a pragmatic manner whether it is health care or economy. He is not bothered about himself. He is patriotic. He calls a spade, a spade whether he is Paul Ryan or George Bush. That way, he is different.
Cheapness is our specialty why get angry.... Like cheap software engineer.... cheap BPO workes.... And with this Cheapness india is growing.... China makes cheap Goods and its 2nd largest economy so why get angry...

Nop ! Not cheap, maybe cheaper than USA, more efficient and humane too. Same goes with BPO etc. True that too is cheaper for USA, but good for India as we could never imagine a to times larger workforce with a million Rs. median salary. There are hundreds with Salaries of 2-3 crore Rs. So its fine.No need to be angree is right though.

I have seen myself Americans preferring to be treated by Indian doctors even though they are as costly as the American doctors. Yashwants and Gargs are preferred and Mohapatras for Lab. testing.
That most of the medical tourist comes to India for non life threatening surgeries like cosmetic surgeries which are not covered by the most of the insurance in the US and you have to pay from your pocket for that. So, it's nothing great to a matter of pride for India and as risk of life is minimal on these kind of surgeries why someone pay high cost from their own pockets and that is what so called medical tourism is all about in India. Very few patients are coming to India for treatment of Cancer other serious illness and if few of them who comes are mostly Indian origin people.
