If I speak to 1.3bn people in a language that 1.3bn don't understand, I will surely leave myself open to interpretation. Isn't it better for me to try and speak the language of the masses and reserve my stiff upper lip for the classes?

So whats your suggestion ? Sign language or smoke signals or ancient tribal dum beats ? lol.
Because no single language can be understood by 1.3 billion people here. Engloish comes very close - with over 650 million people of this country understand.

So whats yer suggestion ? Smoke signals ? Because 500 million people in this country speak / understan ENglish.
Same thing goes on in middleeast and same here in rediff. Cry from rooftop but malbari's never learn from their mistakes. They are arrogant and non-listners. Shashi tharoor has long way to go and follows five star culture in politics. He doesn't understand in politics one has to act as a poor politician. He is staying in five star hotels and travelling business class from his illegal money in UN.

not only in kerala. A stupid like you is there in each & every part of this world. Be happy ):
Tharoor is victim of Hinglish alright. But English is not our mother tongue, ordinary Indians are not exposed to terms like 'cattle class' which could be coloquely accepted expressions in the US or UK. It is simply not necessary for us to know. The Japanese or the Koreans have always done much better than Indians in the international arena with their limited knowledge / application of English. If Tharoor is so classy as to be ignorant about the comprehension level of his not-so-fortunate fellow citizens, he does not deserve to be a minister. It remains a mystery why Manmohan Singh just can not drop a minister whose prime expertise appears to be creating controversies with loose words.

Remember we have more than 25 languages and you cannot thrust Hindi on everybody..Unlike koreans or japanese we do not have a language which is spoked throughout India

Chakraborty babu - you are very correct, fully agree; and, this is the reason a certain lecturing community originating in the east of India are one of the most backward today. But may I please request you to re-read the article?
My first question is why Indians need to be brilliant at spoken or written English. Having travelled across Italy, France and Germany I find the Europeans equally placed with British (Germans infact are much better). Europeans dont feel shy about limited knowledge of so called writer's "Queen's language". They speak English as and when the need, without being desperate about it. Indian masses just like Europeans have not mastered the art of English still they have made a name in the world. Dear Editor learn from the British, be proud of what you are and improvise. Dont try to become British because the moment you step infront of the mirror you will find the colour of your skin reminding you where you belong.
Shashit Tharror just like you thinks his sponed English makes him more3 intelligent and he is a cut abobve the rest. Whereas in fact he misses the long old adage rightly said that "It's better to keep your mouth shut and let the people think you are a fool instead of opening it and leaving do doubt"
Pretending to be smarter and more sophisticated than everyone else won't help he has to earn some self-respect from us Cattle class first

We have the sick culture of mass mentality. Meaning any thing you do not know/ you do not understand/not available to you/you are not capable of is evil. I do not blame you for so blatantly expressing your disgust at some thing so trivial citing vague European cultural anecdotes.
You sound like a typical back biting sorry asz who almost accused Tharror because he speaks polished English. In india, we nurture the culture of 'bashing'. So, you go bash some one 'fair skinned' cos he/she is fair skinned. Bash an IITian cos he is an IITian. Its fashion.
If you use your uscruples, you would note that the article is about 'miinterpretation'. Shashi Tharoor never complained about the butler's English that we are used to speak in English.
I ask you. What's wrong with perfecting an art of speaking a language ? Its not as much a case of bunch of morons saying Nay as it is with proper interpretation.
Lot of us have been to Europe too. And we are very aware of what germans are made of vis-a-vis the british or the french. Its certainly not the language factor there.

Your Outburts of Emotions just expresses Personal Misery and Cynicism. But as you said "we can bash" :-) . I'll suggest to try to be PM of England then as they are the ones for Polished English not us.

Remember we have more than 25 languages and you cannot thrust Hindi on everybody..Unlike koreans or japanese we do not have a language which is spoken throughout India. And dont say english belongs to only the british. If you look in that way Hindi doesnt belong to majority of Indians.

English doesnt belong to British but all the British only speak English. 25 languages in a remarkable feat but no one is preventing you learning the National language.
earlier very few was knowing abt twitter. now due to him it got wide publicity. we have to see whether he has taken money and promoting twitter. this angle no body has looked into. create controversy and earn out of it. what an idea sir?
The Indian media people - those in english media study at Phhatte coaching classes. lol. They , armed with their railway english, invade the media and shout incessantly on live TVs and fill pages of English zines. They are here to conqure the world and restore order.
So, next the battle ensues between a tufts educated formal UN diplomat and alumni of Phatte classes. lol.
In the same manner you are a "tie-and-jacket clad Bhikhari social commentator ".
A social commentator should not be biased at any religion, caste or region.Only a crappy writers oops commentator) of a crappy website writes ohh sorry comments like this...azzzhule
