UID's Madness in this Wondrous Land
by kinggurudev on Sep 06, 2010 11:33 PM

Rs 3,000 crore was being set aside to give Rs 100 to each destitute Indian as an incentive to enroll in the UID programme. If this is not madness, will someone please tell me what is?

Yes we should go ahead with UID
by Satya Vyas on Sep 06, 2010 01:14 PM  | Hide replies

Like all scientific innovations the UID project is definitely a double edged weapon. The sceptics look only at the possible negative use. Did we scrap nuclear energy or say human genome or genetic engineering? All these have negative possibilities. It is important to know that it is the institutions that negates possibilities of misuse of technology. We must work towards strengthening democratic institutions to reap full benefits of such a great project. This is the age when people want to share rather then hide: see the popularity of Facebook and Tweeter. In fact, no responsible and honest citizen should have any thing to hide. our lives should be like books which any body could read. However, there should be mechanisms/institutions for unwanted intrusions/disturbance/ nuisance by commercial interests. All our democracy and democratic institutions have to fail before there is a rise of a Hitlar. If the sceptics are fearing such scenario right away, then we should accept that our democracy has failed. They are very right, however, in demanding strengthening democartic institutions. For this we have to make every citizen a nationalist respectful of democracy and democratic institutions. We need to reinstate the moral and ethical components in the school texts which were taken off by so called pseudo secularists. Morality is morality regardless of religion or faith where it comes from.

Well said Mr.Vyas. The problem of most of the whistle blowers has always remianed in rationalising the situation. We always say a thing or a technology is bad but never bother to see it is nothing in itself but has some value when used. We need to focus more on how rather than what. Same is the question in education sector instead of how people mostly talk of what. Major problem has always been with how to not with what is.

By the time UID Number/Aadhaar is fully implemented its estimated cost would be around Rs 100,000 crores. By the time all 600 million UID Numbers/Aadhaars are issued in four years time after spending Rs 45000 crores, inflation and demand will dictate the price of biometric scanners that have not been talked about to date by Nandan Nilekani.

UID, Population Register, DNA Database & NATGRID
by USwatch on Jun 10, 2010 11:04 AM

Do nation states like India realize that projects such as Unique Identity Card Number, Population Register, DNA Database & National Intelligence Grid reflect huge democracy deficit. One must ponder over what makes nations more democratic and what makes it less democratic.

Advani remembers Civil Liberties
by kinggurudev on Jun 07, 2010 07:38 PM

Didn't Advani and Nitish Kumar remember civil liberties and emergency era when their phones were tapped? What legal remedy is available to you when all your private data is shared without your permission. Right or Left or Centre or Green, privacy and civil liberties is a concern of all.

BANG ON!

Yes, now we have a simple barometer for good things for the country. When the 'ineffectuals' write and talk so vehemently against it, be sure it is good for the country!

Come on Gopal Krisha, what do you expect from Nandan?
by Sameer Bhawat on Jun 07, 2010 07:05 PM

Nadan is same guy who shouted from NASDEC roof top in early 2000 to all Americans that if your job could be done over wire, you should be worried. What more do you expect from this arrogant, immature and childish fellow.
Privacy has no value in India when 10 % or population goes for loo in open for all to see everything.

Is this guy a jihadi lover or a corrupted babu
by Ramadas on Jun 07, 2010 07:04 PM  | Hide replies

Only a jihadi or a corrupted babu have to fear about UID. UID is required if the government wants to keep track of those who wish to deprive their fellow men their human rights. Anyone who takes the straight path do not have to fear. In the civilised world, ones privacy is limited; even in ones home it is only in his/her toilet. If this gentleman is really concerned about his privacy, try living in the forest with the naxalites. The naxalites will not want to know your private details; only what you have in your pocket/bank account.

Suppose you are a "" Minister of a country, and someone wants you to sanction a budget for security against an impending Alien invasion, then he just need to hallucinate you that you were abducted by aliens last night and taken for biological study and after that you were impregnated and sent back to earth, and all the time you were sleep walking.

This guy is stupid
by Darshan on Jun 07, 2010 06:00 PM  | Hide replies

This guy Gopal Krishna is stupid. Why is he following UK in deciding whats not good for them is not good for India? While UK have stricter law and enforcement and common people have better civic sense they can do away with UID for political reasons. We know how in India everything is corrupted so we strongly need a tool for traceability and UID is certainly the one that will fulfill that. I have seen first hand in the US how easy it makes things when there is unique SSN for everybody. I would say UID will certainly bear fruit in the future. And what about privacy? government can trace your phone/cell/net surfing habits, companies can sell your data and you are talking about privacy ? in the name of privacy you can NOT allow terrorists to infiltrate in to India.

As if terrorists will need to show UID before shooting? what a joke. For terrorist you need efficient security force as a first step. And efficient security force is non existent in INDIA! 3 days to clear 10 terrorist, what an efficiency. Many blasts every year since 1993, none hanged or executed. What an efficiency.

You seems to have never heard of identity theft that affects millions every year in US. You also seems to have never heard about how social security is misused and US is often citing European example of identity security, while European example is not perfect but its safer than US social security. All those who refuse to learn from others seems to have found ancestral home in India.
