It is surprising that the Maharashtra government has brought in such a legislation. Because, it is obvious that the taxi-drivers of a city will automatically try to learn and speak the local language - in order to survive in the trade. So, it does not make any sense to make such a legislation, except for wooing the narrow-minded Marathi lobby! On the other hand, if the taxi-drivers of Mumbai manage to flourish in the trade even without knowing Marathi, then it is a clear fact that Marathi is not necessarily required to survive in Mumbai. So, again, it does not make any sense to impose something which is not required. Therefore, either way, the decision to make such a legislation is surprising and politically motivated!

Is narrow minded trying to uphold your own language and culture? Is it wrong to protect your own language and culture IN YOUR OWN LAND from foreign aggressors?

My point is simple. If Marathi is required to pursue a living in Mumbai, the taxi-drivers will certainly learn it - law or no law! But, if, on the other hand, it is not necessary to learn Marathi to pursue a living in Mumbai, then they will never learn it, law or no law.
Secondly, it is unconstitutional to impose a condition for the constitutional right to profession!

one does not get parsi, jain or gujarathi taxi drivers. the communities mostly employ drivers from other linguistic or ethnic communities. why? it will be a good lesson for maharashtrian and other communities seeking reservation.
