We have seen the patriotism of the NRIs during the balance of payment crisis during the early 1990s. They were the first to withdraw their deposits from India like rats deserting sinking ships. The GOI had to physically move gold from the vaults of RBI in Mumbai to London to tide over the crisis. In the first place they were investing in Indian Banks only because they were offered a higher rate of interest than offered by the Banks in US or UK. Indian govt had spent enormous amounts for re-patriation of those stranded during the Kuwait-Iraq war. They are not doing any favour to the country by working else where. If they are earning well, good for them and their family.
