I have a 2007 Dell laptop. My classmates have other years laptop. They think I am advanced coming from India. We discuss about the judicial system in India, their aborigines with our adivsasis and so on. On the whole, India is doing good. I feel good with Indian progress. Indira Gopinath.

I had gone to Germany on a company trip. While passing through security check a person the police asked me where is your laptop? I said I did not have one. He asked again? Where is your laptop? I said I am not carrying it on this tour. He surprisingly stared at me and said....AN INDIAN WITHOUT A LAPTOP!!!...AMAZING!!!
So not all in every country think India is backward country and land where every other person is a snake chrmer, elephants roam on roads and people disappear in sky doing the rope trick. May be ten years back what Dhruv says was true...

Andrew James(or something)(I do not remember the exact name) of GE said in a recent interview. "Thank God, I have India on my side, With India on my side I feel like a turtle. i.e.India is my armour" This he said while answering question on US sub-prime crisis

Thanks Sanchita ,You didn't say i lied.Public tolerence for truth is too little...i can make out from your moderated comments. However what shocked me is your conclusion that all these facts are old & known to people...i am confused then...still they feel we are not to be made fun of !!!I wrote negatives as a reason for little boy's questions ...all this makes us a laughing stock as a nation ...there are forums with suitable audience to discuss finest indian arts, cultures, traditions ... however it would have been out of place as response to the title of the item above. If all this does not make indians irritated, bitter, hurt & responsive ... probably we are dead.May be one does not feel all this so intensly if one is staying in India alongwith indians around...

The world can know about India only....if we Indians communicate about India .......
by shobana nair on Mar 01, 2008 05:33 PM

Yes,India and Indians will be less confusing to the world only if Indians communicate with the outer world freely about what India stands for and the internal matters of India in detail.India's diverse regions languages costumes religions and other matters have brought in more confusion, as no nation has seen unity in its diversity.Indians should proudly describe India to the world around and remove all the misunderstanding they have about the land and the people in India, more good novels written in India should be exported for the world to read and understand the nation.Let others also learn about this wonderful world beyond the world they know.

You are right becuase a couple years ago, one of my classmate told me that India is poor and I was like "No". Than I asked him "How can you tell that India is poor?" he told that "I have seen videos on tv." Than I told him that "the reporters only show videos form villages but not from cities. So I think the media plays a major role over here. BBC shows a lot of videos like that and that is the reason why Americans think India is poor.

Dude, your 4 major metro cities are the biggest villages of the world...EVERY MORNING THESE CITIES TURN INTO BIGGEST OPEN COMMUNITY TOILETS OF THE WORLD...(i stay in a magapolis in north east Asia (12 million population) with zero slum ...so i say so with extreme grief)do you know...where over 55% population stays in slums...the names Dharavi, Trans-Yamuna shanties etc are on world map ...if you are as young as Dhruv ...pl do discuss these matters with your dad...Indian villages are better than indian cities which are crumbling under infrastructure overload, crime, poverty ...triggered by uncontrolled unidirectional mass movement ...that's how anti-north agitation started...

Stop being a loud speaker, good for nothing, just creating noise pollution. These 4 big cities are centers of Indian governance, trade and commerce ,art.. You have been over hearing. Ask your dad if Indians clam India to be a developed country.
Everyone knows that BBC and CNN are British and American oriented. I wouldn't call them biased against India but surely they are more of local channels pretending to be cover other countries as well..

The subject which may look like about general knowledge of people of one country about another ...is basically rooted in much more serious issue of identity of a nation on the international level. The fact is that we are not considered a serious nation...and are always looked down at ...for reasons solely attributed to indians ...noone else.A country is not respected for supply of manpower to USA or any such advance country ,where you are studying due to your parent's occupation etc.Whatever we boast , we are a country mismanaged...to talk of development...if our over 50% population is to bare their bums in open every morning to attend nature's call ...and carrying night soil on head continues ...however you fool people about your progress ...they will not stop making fun at India...too small countries like Korea, new Zealand, Israel,UAE are known by world much much better ...you got to make an image by performance...talk is not enough.

Well..... let's not talk about small countries like NZ, UAE, Korea etc. Smaller countries are easy to govern and secondly, they do seem to have more civic sense than us Indians. Lets face it, even the so called educated folk do not think twice before littering the streets. So, it is up to us to set an example, involve ourselves more in the communities and then rest will follow.....

But on the topic of small countries, what about places like Lebanon, Sierre Leone etc..???

Peace .....

In fact , i meant,World knows nations by their collective performance ...if americans know a little about india...we failed to make mark...the small countries i quoted made a mark in the world so they are known ...not to say that all small countries can make mark...(Korea was a colony of Japan and was compeletely devastated ...unlike India by Britishers who gifted not only consolidated territory...ok...2 parts... but left great institutions like railways, postoffice, military )look at Bangladesh ,Nepal,Srilanka ...all poor as us.And 1% indians abroad do not represent progress of india...this is a huge stupidity among indians ...boasting India shining...if you think yr size is too big to handle...let some of states part away...anyway they are not interested to stay with this union...all said & done...i mean , we are responsible for our mess...can't blame on size, plurality or Imperialism endlessly .

How do you say, "Small countries are easy to manage"? Where do you get funds from? How do people see you? How do they recognise your potential to invest their money in. Take singapore, it is growing because of its merit. Take Malaysia, Korea, they could exhibit their potential to the world, through leadership in technology and building brands and names people trust. Few years back, their forex reserves were multiple times, better than that of India.

Did I know what is real India?
by Ja$m!Ne....! on Mar 01, 2008 04:35 AM

I met one of my work colleagues at Oxford Street,London who said he is visiting India this March. Him being a white British and Me 'an Indian' suggested him to definately visit 'GOA'. He shot at me, Goa aint 'REAL INDIA' and he expressed his desire to spend a week strolling in the 'gulleys' of Amritsar with real 'Indians' rather than partying with drugged junkies. His views left me red faced.

70% of Indians are below poverty
by ThoondilKaaran on Mar 01, 2008 03:37 AM  | Hide replies

Dhruv,
There is no fault in accepting the fact. 70% of Indians live below poverty line. The countries Sanitation facilities are not that good. Villages (which constitutes majority of India) have no proper eletricity and roads.

But, make no mistakes. These poor people are real and they are more happy than the rich folks who don't want to pay up the poor for their work.

It's not surprising to see this anywhere in the World
by Vasu Reddy on Feb 29, 2008 11:51 PM

Congratulations to young Dhruv on writing about a simple issue of not knowing about the world.

It is just not in America but everywhere in the world, it is same unknown list of things. I am sure the same questions will be asked by Chinese about America or Rural Indians about some absurd things that are done in America. Just because people don't know about the world outside of their own country, it is not demeaning to the people outside of their country, it is simply not knowing about it. Whenever a question is asked of us about our country, we should make a best effort to correct the perceptions of any untruth, and respond with positives of our country.

There is no shame in preaching good things about India. The very fact every little town in USA has at least a few of us demonstrates that we are good, law abiding and contributing citizens of the world. Let us educate our neighbors on the virtues of India and all the good things that are happening with India.

Just to clarify
by vinnie on Feb 29, 2008 11:48 PM  | Hide replies

The ignorance of US people comes from the fact that they are not educated about other countries at all. For average American their world is US only. As if other countries do not exist.

But same cannot be said about UK as such. Here I find them much more educated about rest of world including India and Pakistan.

Around 3 years back I met one British-Italian person in hospital where I was waiting for some checkup. We started talking and he said that India is a miracle that such a diverse and large country can remain democratic and secular whereas many tiny countries cannot sustain democracy. I felt proud about that.

I have to clarify many times to people that although there are small number of similarities between India and Pakistan however there are large differences between them.

Dude for a second forget about the world. Just ask yourself "How much do you know about India?" You would probably don't know all words in Hindi. I think British ruling over India made it worse becuase look at us write now, we are Indians and rather than talking in Hindi we are talking in English. When I look at my friends reading newspaper in their language, I feel sad that most people in delhi and mumbai don't even talk in our national language. Thay just talk in english. For ex. Riddhima in Dill Mill Gayye doesn't speak in Hindi, she speaks english all the time. In an interview she said that I memorize all the words and than I speak. That made me mad, I was like "India mein reh ke angrezi bolne ki kya zaroorat hai". I think sooner our all customs, traditions and languages, everything will be forgotten and all Indians will be spaeking english instead of our national language.
