Thats the weak link for India to exploit.

The member states must have been aghast at the US's near monopolising of the contracts and must have wanted more than the US was willing to throw at them. It's pure business, rest is B S.

These are the people to contact for supplies, and throw US into the waste bin.

Nuclear deal in dire trouble
by keshav kumar on Sep 01, 2008 08:53 AM  | Hide replies

It was the most stupid deal to go for. It is God's grace that it has come across stoppers which I wish should stop it completely.

From day one, it was crystal clear that US interest in it was to get the thin end of the wedge of CTBT and NPT to get complete control on India's Nukes thus neutralsing India once for all.

But the disasterous Govt.of India managers began to fool the people by making foolish propaganda that it is for Electricity generation.

Hope, some sense trickles into the senile and expired mind PM .

'Even if a Republican administration takes up the deal again, it won't offer terms as favourable as the present one.'

How does Praful Bidwai know this?

'New Zealand and Austria which take nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament sincerely'

Really? Why are NZ, to take an example, protected by the US nuclear umbrella?

'India's credibility in matters nuclear has taken a beating since 1998 when it blasted its way into the nuclear club '

Credibility? And in 1998? What about the first test in 1974? By this argument, both the US and Russia should've lost credibility long ago, after all that hot air about the SALT treaties in the 1980s. Why is NZ still chums with the US then?

' some of them don't have a big stake in Indian contracts -- and little to lose by sticking to amendments.'

True. But what about the big guys in NSG - like France, Russia and the US - which do? I would say a split in the NSG is more plausible, should these lilliputs try to pull more than their weight.

Its also about the writer...Praful Bidwai is a hard core anti nuclear person, who was against the tests in 1998 and is against any form of nuclear power either civilian or military, in the mistaken notion that India can't afford costly nuclear technology. It's time he understood that it is lack of ensuring our own security both military and economic that we ended up as a slave nation. Grow up Mr Bidwai

The deadenders of the world. Old world mired in its tendencies to look at India and Pakistan through the same prism.

India is 100 times different. the idea of nuclear proliferation is non existent in Indian context. But these countries don't get it.

And also we as Indians need to be blamed on conitnuously harping on the same old india-paki bandwagon. Even though we need to set our standards higher than with our failed neighbor. All this plays into the hands of these 'protectors' of nuclear technology, the so called de-evolving west.

India goals and ambitions are not governed by NSG or by any other deadener state for that matter. We are better than them. We will prevail.

The Leftist progandist like Praful do India a great disservice. They want to see red in anything that is too do with US and remotely against China. These guys try to mould public opinion in name of fairplay and secualrism.
They remind us of NAZI PROPOGANDA MACHINE.
Shame on such writers.
The very fact we are facing so much opposion from NSG members reinforces the fact that we have more to gain than lose by the deal.In anycase the NSG opposition pales in front of Karat's unflexible approach.

We again say that MMS and Company are selling our country. Who gave permission to Congress leaders to give classified advertisment, "India on Sale"? Legal experts say that an Italian Sardar cannot sell our India.

What is their opinion about this deal now? The reluctance of the 20 odd members show that the deal doesnot infringe upon India's external security.

How doesn't it? The non-reluctance of 25 members (including the big bully America) "proves" it does....

Doesn't it?... :-)

There is a peasant saying in Malayalam , my native language , to the effect that one should not expect to keep and rear one's dog in expectation of a neighbour's largesse (the actual wording is , ahem , a bit more down to earth).
Nehru's India apart , no country on earth has aquiesced its position under the sun to any other nation. It would be unfair to expect the United States of America to pave the way for a Pax indica like we paved the way for a Pax Sinensis.
The world will have to give us better terms;we will have our place under the sun ;and our present and future rulers better deliver the goods; the barriers to entry may be high ,but better alternatives to our bumbling rulers wil certainly be thrown up (remember the advent of an effective leader like Sardar Patel.Sadly we missed the bus with him).As the Americans are fond of saying , "Shape up or ship out".

So what?

I always supported the nuclear deal. i think its good for immediate future of India.

However if it doesn't get approval in NSG then India will have to move on. Nuclear energy is a must for India for next 15-20 years. We need to start investing heavily in developing the Thorium based nuclear reactors. Necessity is the mother of invention...if we try hard we can find soultion to our energy problems on our own.

Just a passing comment.. Dont blame Switzerland and Austria..these are some of the the few European countries who are not American stooges.
