i think Afzal should be rewarded Padmashree for attacking parliament, thats the way it would have worked had, "Author-activist" Arundhati Roy been PM of "secular" India. one would dare to imagine what would be USA response had some one attacked white house! Better open up terrorism schools where Afzal can train like minded people to attack the entire democratic institute.
I think what Arundhati Roy spoke about Judiciary, torture and the police state is dead on. How can people with conscience allow a man whose quilt is not proven beyond reasonable doubt be hanged just for appeasement of the public? The government does not want to take the responsibility for its failure to prevent the terrorist act & hence wants some kind of closure by taking the life of Afzal.
I think the bigger question here is what kind of democracy & society do we want? A just & fair kind where every individual is treated with dignity and respect or the one where police & power rules, torture of prisoners is tolerated & accepted?
Police & army brutality is not good for a democracy. Probably they are catching the wrong guys & punishing them. But what is the guarentee that the police/army will be right always? As all people, they are human too & they make mistakes. If there is no due process then they are not held accountable & this will lead to lawlessness.
I am not saying that Afzal is not accountable to his crimes but if he is there should be proof provided & it should be uneqvivocal. If not any punishment given to him would not be just as per our own constitution.
I request Ms. Arundhati Rai to please leave the citizenship of India and get a pakistani or chineez or above all an AL-Quaida passport. These people dont have any respect for India, Indianness or Indian society. They only do what their uncles say from abroads. Shit on such people.... There are thousands of poor people in india embattled in courts without lawyers. They can not even afford a lawyer. I dont understand where these social activist are in those cases and why they are only seen in high profile cases to try to gain publicity.
Ms roy, It is quite a commendable achievement. I am not very sure how the investigation agencies would have spent so much time and energy in finding out the treacherous ways and means of Mr Afzal that paved way for killing innocent policemen who guarded our corrupt politicians. Does your action mean the guys who lost their lives were fools or worse than the dreaded terrorists and the ones like afzal who materminded the attack.
