Amen to that Sumit!!!

But don't you think it is also the duty of the media, specially those people involved in music reviews to write about these bands? You guys have a lot of power, you know (I'm assuming you're a jounrnalist).
But even your profession has become 'economically oriented'. Sell as many copies as possible. Command the highest price per column-inches written.
Just write about these guys in big bold letters and everyone will sit up and take notice.

I had fallen in love with this number called 'Walk On' by Orange Street. But till date haven't been able to get an album (Will try again once I come back to India though). So I know what you're talking about. I'm not an expert on rock music, but I can understand good music. So go ahead you guys, write about the great Indian rock bands. They may be the biggest things yet.

Rgds,
Indraneel

its going to take some time!

Its only going to take some time. We should keep in mind that still only a handful of people in India who understand english, much less undersdtand it well enough to get to the essence of Rock songs. Plus we havn't got accustomed to the culture of violence, sex, drugs and alcohol, not to forget the 'angst' that these songs so successfully portray.

Possibly it is still simpler for people to go and listen to some slow ballads with which they can relate to and understand...and even these people form only a niche category, judging from the crowds and response to the concert...

It was heartning to see someone take a stand and tell the media that we yet have "gora" chamdi phobia. We have much better bands than MLTR here in India and NOBODY promotes them when they play or want to play. BUT a band who has not had a hit since a long time,(not that they are bad..they WERE good) they go outboard, and promote them like they are gods of the music world and we should be paying through our noses to listen to them. Its promoted in a way which says "Ure a jerk, if u dont come to hear them"
Anyways, if deff lepard come down..yea...dats a good band..i would go :) NOT MLTR...
GOIN TO INDEPENDANCE DAY ROCK..

Rock music

This is in reference to Mr Sumit Bhattacharya's article on Rock music in India. I totally agree with him. We lapup any trash that comes from the West convinentely forgeting that we have some great singers, song writers, muscians and rock band but why cant theyu be seen and heard? He rightly says that the music companies wont touch them with a bargepole. They would rather promote those remixes which does nothing but kill the beautiful original songs.

Like Lou Majaw and the Great Society. What a FANTASTIC singer and musician he is. See him play and hear his songs and if it does not stir you from the guts than you know nothing about rock music. I have seen him play a hundred times and wont tier to see him play another 100 times. And I am not saying this simply because Iam from the North East. There are many others like him dying to cut an album and make people hear them. But people who matter does not care a hoot about them and their music. They play original and meaningful music not some stupid punk rock.
It is a classic case of The Grass Is Greener On The Other Side. We dont realise what we are misssing at home.
They dont make the cut because their skin is not white.

Some years ago, I did write a similar piece for a newspaper but it did not go down well with those who beat around the bush in Delhi's rockland. Being in the mid-forties, I know what "High", later "Great Bear" meant to us in the seventies. The author forgets to mention Nondon Bagchi, who can still impart a lesson or two to the overrated Shivamani. At the Shimla Beat in the 70's, Nondon had drummed on the microphone to tell stiff upperlipped rockers who had gathered there that he was no less a drummer than Charlie Wats or Mac Tontoh. I agree with the author that it is unfortunate how we never try to see our own glorious past. It is as unforltunate that third-grade westerners and ridiculous re-mixes have caught the fancy of a generation that has no clue to what rock or "Congo Square" are all about. Or why Jethro Tull is Tull and not Till, which it should have been for the name's historical significance. I don't really want to be pedantic on this count, but I felt the author should have been more hard-hitting.

Thanks and regards

Barid

i couldn't help but agree with you....you got it right.its a pity how indegenious stuff is often pushed under the carpet and you can always hear the boo-boohs and catcalls when someone ventures to perform originals.what with this insolent obsession for anything thats western...i can safely hazard a guess that this situation will linger and stink. no point trying to show these pansies what it is about...leave the dross behind and save yourself the effort.

I fully agree with the reviewer. There is pure rock talent lying across the length and breadth of the country. You name what type of genre of rock music we have.Ok agreed the slang does not stand out but hey we r Indians ( knock knock ).Indian public just copy whatever the west does.where does rock/metal exist in the west nowadays ( full of boy/girl bands /r&B shit and..what the horror one =remixes ).Don't you see the same culture developing here.
Anyway for me I do not give a damm if the public likes rock music or not.On any given day i would watch any rock band from India as well as abroad. Why b'cause Rock(metal my pref ) rulZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ!!!
