When will India rock? Drawing Parallels, a comparative Ex.
by kavindramathi on Oct 04, 2005 08:01 PM

Indian rock faces the same plight like "Humpy". Koneru Humpy has setup a new World Record of becoming the Youngest-Ever Woman to achieve the Men's GM Title. Like Sania Mirza, Koneru Humpy is a 'first' for an Indian woman. Born on March 31, 1987, she is a chess grandmaster. Her April 2004 FIDE ELO ratingis 2513, placing her as No. 3 in the world for women. But like the Indian Rock Bands, she doesnt get noticed. Only when "Micheal" and Sania rock n roll, catches the attention of most Indians. For better or worse, the bottom line is that- research shows beauty matters; it pervades society and affects how we choose loved ones. The poignant part would be if beauty takes away from achievement and becomes the new benchmark for choosing icons.

Anything from the west is seen in a totally different light. Even people who have been there for sometime think everything is SO great about it. Not just the music! :-L

with due respects to your knowledge about all the forgotten messiah s of western music in india.. one think i was left wondering after i read your article is .. what are you really trying to say?...
for starters you say that.. rock in india is dead (!?).. lets talk some facts here.. rock has never really had a mass following anywhere....it has always had a niche audience anywhere in the world..so why single out india.. and you probably havent heard of bands like motherjane and orange street which have performed to audiences abroad..my point here being.. you cannot expect support for western rock bands.. just because you have to.. there arent more than a handfull of bands which can come up with genuine covers with no influences from any of the biggies.. and lets leave floyd out of this please..there can be no imitations really..
cheers

Duh!
by Aussiecricfan on Oct 03, 2005 02:21 PM

Mate

The group is called ' Megadeth' and not 'Megadeath'. It is one thing not to give due recognition to western bands, but to mess up their names is kinda taking it a bit to the extreme!

Cheers

very true my friend, but i can only empahtise and do not much.yes it is the media and the conventional bs of the indian crowd or youth i cant say.we havnt conditioned ourselves to look beyond the glasses of sheer foreing brand.moreover its als like the kind of exposure indian riock bands get, actually not much.besides gir and iit fest blitzkrieg only bein an overdone partial tamasha, i dont see any other platoform.and yes we will support 10 remixes than listen to an original compilation...sad but true..

When will India rock?

Personally, I havent seen many young Indians, and the Indian recording houses; dont want to go into details, Originality and so they remain superficial. To top it, they talk with confidence combined with little respect for anything "Rock" produced within India, though Indian influence on western rock bands is immense!. Their attitude - "loser" for, they are not inspired and seek inspiration, gazing at the rock stars from the west. Real Rock Music flows whenever young "rock n roll" India decides its time to stop complaining or being depressed about the state of the world, start doing something about it; like read voraciously- on an average of two books a week; and gradually put together a picture in their own mind of the current state of the world, how we got here, what we needed to do about it, And then share what is learned and experienced, also in part discuss it with others, find out if they felt the same - then, finally, would flow the real Indian rock music!! Still better, a school of rock could help: for creativity is not only dead, but also not appreciated when it comes from Rocking Indians themselves- sad but true rock

Wake-up call
by Mahesh Shantaram on Oct 03, 2005 02:18 AM

A well-articulated wake-up call. I hope people turn down their boom boxes and listen.

But then again, we've been deprived of rock concerts for so long, it's nice to have the greats perform in India before they retire.
