China encircling a scary reality
by G. Sunil on Oct 05, 2004 01:23 PM

It is indeed a very scary outlook. The Chinese can be ruthless they are not a democracy and can get away with whatever they want. They are so strong economically and militarily that no one not even the only remaining Super power and self imposed leader of the world United States will dare take any action or even speak a word against China if it decides to take military, inhuman and unreasonable actions both within and outside China.

We as a nation will have to be proactive and engage with China in such a way that they have strong economic interests in India, which will serve as a protection for us. Let the think tanks think of ways and means to achieve it. We also have a lot to learn from the way the Chinese have achieved success in the sports arena. The only area that we can beat China over the foreseeable future is in regard to Population, which however is not a very desirable success.

Chinease threat...
by AK on Oct 05, 2004 01:20 PM

I agree they are encircling India. And, we should expect a war with them in next 5-10 or say 20 years, may sound unrealistic. They will come.

We need to be better prepared this time not only for China but for Pakistan as well because the future war will be fought between India on one side and Pakistan, Burma, Bangladesh and China on the other.

We shouldn't trust any country including the US and Russia. It's our country and we have to defend it.

India's immediate need is to build a Missile defence system for the cities like Delhi,Bombay etc and stratigic locations like Bangalore, sriharikota etc where we have our Defence and other Research establishmets including the Missile storage facilities.

There is a urgent need of some 35-45 ICBM to reach any City anywhere in China or any part of the World if that matters to carry the thermo-nuclear warhead.
Let our enemy know we can strike them anywhere anytime at their location. We should not be taken as granted.

We need to expand and modernize our Navy as Navy has a much wider role to play in any future wars.

Economist and Politician of India should understand what they want a free India or a defeated India !!!!!!!

Is China encircling India?
by Dwarakanath on Oct 05, 2004 12:03 PM

Yes. Please recall the comment made by our former Defence Minister Mr. George Fernandes. No. 1 enemy of India is China and not Pakistan.

We should always be careful about the threat. Though China cannot directly engage India in a war anymore, problems will increase in borders (especially Arunachal Pradesh).

India should also keep the options open on Taiwan and Tibet.

With regards,

What harm can it cause!!
by Madhab on Oct 05, 2004 11:25 AM

If China is building good roads, ports, bridges in Burma, whats harm in that? Indians seem to be too xenophobic still of any foreigner! Be it Chinese, Japanese, Americans! In fact, India's North-East should be opened up with the economic boom region of the South Eastern China's Guangdong province and the greater South East Asia! An expressway through Burma to Bankok to KL to Singapore would facilitate the movement of people from North East India--who share much common culture, customs and ethnicity with the region's people than with BEngalis and Biharis!Indians must stop preaching good fundas only and start building its own good roads in Bangalore (Bangalore's abysmal infrastructure is world famous now!) rather than worrying about Chinese building good infrastructure in Burma. God save this country from xenophobic like this write who wasted lots of space writing useless things instead of writing for India's need to develop its own cities, roads, ports, airports!

China moving on.
by Nag on Oct 05, 2004 08:53 AM

China is definitely moving on and on... in India the other side, Govt does not take interest in venurable areas all along the border except with that of Nepal and Bhutan. New Delhi has to win the people of troubled areas along the border, through soft means like improving economic standrards and doing a bit more on that side, If still things do not work out then may be force needs to be used.

New Delhi's attitude towards anything beyond West Bengal and to some extent Assam has been sad. And this might very well have been sparked by the almost loss of North East states during the 62' conflict and the famous speeach from Nehru.

rise of peaceful China
by Mayya on Oct 05, 2004 04:23 AM  | Hide replies

Well, having stayed abroad for more than 6 years, I could add some of the sentiments raised in this article. Whenever an Indian comes across a Chinese, the Chinese is kind and Indian is happy. However, an Indian comes across a group of Chinese, very often there is a sense of aggression and look of pity. Otherway around, we always try to accomodate and be compassionate (which is the (bad???) habit of Indians that has costed them throughout the history).

It would however been helpful if Rediff also includes Claude Apri's credentials along with his aritcle.

RE:rise of peaceful China

Excellent , though I don't fully agree that a below average performance in Olympics makes our Face seem long before the world. We are OK at Cricket ...right BUT WE HAVE 2 IMPROVE

The only competition to China's economy and hence position is India, and given by their nature and past history, they 'll not stop anything to De-tabilise India FOR their gain .
Their population and requirement of resources is growing and they need more business ..and reduction in India's share would mean direct gain to China.
(Infosys and other companies,,,,will you stop opening up campus in China and stop acting like fools )
Our support is US, due to which China has been kind with us (Atleast on the face) and YES I agree with Mayya that for Chinese its a matter of national interest to put Inida down.
SOLUTION : Mr. Shivraj Patil should pay less attention on his attire and more on action in North East.
Nepal should be encouraged to get US help to erase Maoists.
Nagas/north eastern states should be brought into mainstream India.
Bangladesh should be attacked and we must erase the training camps there.
"INDIANS AND POLITICIANS SHOULD START THINKING "AGGRESSION IS THE BEST DEFENCE "

Really alarming!
by Lak on Oct 05, 2004 02:29 AM

Thanks for this article, rediff. This is, indeed, a great cause for concern for all Indians. What have our politicians done about this? It is high time we had some really smart, knowledgeable and gutsy people in our foreign affairs department who can think long-range and pragmatically. I wonder if the Left will support any move against China. Instead of attending to the serious crises in the North-East that may cause another Kashmir-like situation, our netas are busy shouting about the "Tiranga" controversy, Aiyar has raked up the Savarkar non-issue and both ruling and opposition parties are fighting like kindergarten children. Cry, the beloved country!
