Indians are truly Secular!!!
by Arundathy on May 20, 2004 10:52 PM

Every body has his or her interpretations about the way India voted & why Sonia refused to be PM.

However,a very interesting (albeit) unintentional result is that we have a Muslim for a President,
a Sikh for a Prime Minister & a Christian as the leader of the Leading Parlimentary Party.

It just shows that we Indians are mature enough to accept leaders based on their capabilities & passion for our country rather than judge them by the religion they belong to.

Election 2004 has been a mature mandate of a mature Indian Electorate- a fitting reply to BJP's Communal politics & Hindutuva agenda!! atlast we saw through their (BJP's) double talk!!!Good for you India!!!!

Please stop this nonsense' I was under impression that media plays nuetral role
by Ranjit Tatineni on May 20, 2004 09:46 PM

Please stop this nonsense,
You have written such a lenghty colomn but no where you mentioned how she would qualify for a Respectable prime minister role( all the reasons I could see is She is a member of Dynasty rule or sympaty vote gatherer as she lost her Mother in law and Husband because of terrorrists, and lets be honest those r not the right things you look in a leader). Please don't tell people Sonia didn't want to become prime minister ( We all seen it in 1999 and now in between may 13th to 17th. She didn't took up post because Congress didn't get required majority(50%) and there is an evidence of up roar amoung people about her origin and could have toppled govt.). We respect Sonia gandhi and her children as they were family of our ex prime minister and We all sympathise for the loss of rajiv gandhi and that's where the matter should end, rather than deciding to vote them for the above reasons. Don't defame Mahatma Ghandhi by comparing sonia's decision to his. Please use media in a right way. Don't Say being born and brought up in india is not Important, Probably not to you but it is Very important for many and I'm very Proud to be on of the Billion of those. Ranjit..

Sonia & Dr. Manmohan Singh
by raphael sebastian on May 20, 2004 05:49 PM

Congress has now come to power after the route. Primarily, it is necessary to keep the base firm trying its level best by giving the people the much needed good governance. Soniaji is not at all power crazy as is the case with every Tom , Dick and Harry in politics irrespective of which party they belong to. She is not cheap to play remote control whose name is synonymous with Bal Thackre, nor is she interested, at least, at this stage, to aim her children for the coveted position in the next election. That part will be played by electorates and the elected representatives in the party, will be compelled to take a decision in favour of either Rahul or Priyanka, as is the present case with Sonia. In all probability, in the days to come, Soniaji will strive to get into the hearts of rural and urban populace, to concretize a firm base for the congress. If BJPs leadership does not play constructive opposition, they will slowly but steadily vanish into oblivion. The reason why she elected Dr. Manmohan Singh is quite obvious that he is one of the tallests among the lot, to put the countrys governance on proper track and that he is probably the only one who is respected and accepted by all including BJP. BJP has shut its mouth over what has happened on the formation of Government - Sonas strategy will certainly keep BJP at bay while government will function smoothly without any spoke.
