I work in an event management company and hence I know how the jury works - i can understand Amir for ignoring Indian awards however, guys who critisises him please note - he does go to national awards function which is a true representative of Indian cinema. Now about Peepli Live - the movie was too loud - I would have prefered a movie like Udan to go for Oscars

National Awards are true representation of Indian cinema. No bigger joke than this ????

My perception is there is quite a bit of lobbying happen in indian awards. It's difficult to believe who got the award was really the best. Amir Khan in his initial years didn't get the recognition for films like Jo Jeeta Woh Sikandar, Akele Hum Akele Tum, QSQT, Dil may be few others. That might have made him felt disgruntled about it.
However lobbying happens in Oscar and Golden Globe also in varying extent.

once you lose the belief and passion ...not very easy to get that back...
In any case today these award ceremonies have only business value..it used to be different in 60s,70s or even early 90s when filmfare used to sponsor it...but now there are loads of imitators which devalued it bigtime..
i dont understand why we indians are like f00ls...showing our private parts in public...sending peepli live is sending our private parts in oscar....every country in the world except few have problem..every country is fighting with political corruption, money laundering...killing poor etc,. we have additionally media f00ling and hypocrite professionals...who dont understand what to be shown and what not they just expose every things...the day is not far...a media journalist will say...today my wife failed to sduce me...this is too much...stop showing bad about our country...work on improvement...everyone wil watch our misery and lausgh no one will help us..we need to help ourselves.

If we dont do it then foreigners will come and make movies on slum kids. Might as well make it ourselves and try to win oscars
1)when india sent this 'sorry excuse' of a movie to oscars it was said that they sent it because amir had 'connections' there. apparently even these 'connections' couldn't help amir. 2) oscars are overrated in the sense that they are considered as the ultimate holy grail by a lot of filmmakers. 3) hollywood churns out really horrible movies every year just like bollywood but still there are a few directors there who are still true to their art. while in india hardly any name comes to mind (maybe bharadwaj?)

My observation is oscar movies are generally more of good people/moral/social value and less of commercial value. Even the movies which gets nominated in different categories are quite good. Not sure whether oscar is over-rated but do we have any replacement for the film-makers to get global recognition?
And about indian directors you rightly named vishal bhardwaj, apart from that we have Madhur Bhandarkar, Rituporno Ghosh, Aparna Sen, Imtiaz Hussain, Raj Kumar Hirani who had made some excellent movies with original subjects

i am woefully ignorant about indian cinema in general though i really appreciate the works of ray , adoor , sen etc. but you have some good names in that list....though some have failed to match the promise of their first film with their later releases. about global recogniation...there are some events that still recognize a good and original effort....cannes is one , bafta is other.
IF Amir khan's name is not attach to the film and so much PR by khan no one might have known this film exist. It was too boring and predictive i myself didn't watch it on TV It looks like better to do household work rather wasting time on this movie. Anyway now a days only Amir Khan's movie goes to oscar on india's behalf as he is the only one who actually cares for oscar award. Better to have send 3 idiots instead AAmir khan
