Ilayaraja does not want to enter Bollywood because he dont want to fight with R.D.Burman
Who he likes and ilayaraja is diehard fan
of S.D.Burman.This is my assumption. Anyway
KB,MR,BR were packing up.
Come on Raja give one more hit. i think his
best ever work is "GURU" malayalam .

RD Burman is no match for Ilayaraja...with majority of his works inspired from others music like AR Rahman.

The only composers who are comparable with Ilayaraja are G.Ramanathan and Naushad Ali...

Also for Thyagarajan...80's music in Hindi Film industry was ruled by Laksmikanth Pyarelal and Jatin Lalit..

RD Burman was not there, he was finished by mid 80's made his comeback in his final movie 1942- Love Story.

Self Respect or Arrogance
by nitu krishnan on Sep 21, 2010 09:15 PM  | Hide replies

Its a pity that many associate IR's self esteem to arrogance.
He does not butter anyone to climb the ladder of success. He refuses to flatter any directors, producers, actors for no reason. He does not work special for SPECIAL DIRECTORS, SPECIAL ACTORS AND SPECIAL BANNERS. To him kamal movies are as important as pandiarajan's. Can you believe he composed a song with extremely complex orchestration like "thendral vandhu theendum " for a low budget movie "avatharam" with Nasser as the hero and director. It shows his depths of sincerity as a composer. If a man refuses to stoop down to the whims and fancies of film industry personalities, he cannot be termed as arrogant. He is a man who always keeps his head and music held high. K.Balachander who was the key person in IR's downfall is paying the price for it and so is Bharathi raja and several others. But IR is still around and has won a national award and akshaya samman award at the age of 65. And above all , he has the hearts, wishes and prayers of all 1970, 1980, 1990 born people who swear by his music... Who's egoistic and humble is something that we cannot decide..it is one's own conscience that decides....

So Ms Nitu in that process who are the losers? It is you and me and Filim music in general Let us face it Producers pay, directors plan others contribute, why should ego come in the way? That is where ARR excels Good PRO,above average talent, top of the filim music world Our friend sulking. If he had not got into legal hassels with Sippys in 80s he would have ruled That is my regret Sheer talent who should have been all over. Thanks Balki now too late I suppose Hope I am wrong Hope he regains his glory on all India level He might not want it but as hard core fan I want it

I understand. But the fact remains that bollywood superficially decides who's on top...Kamal Hassan and VaniJayaram were not welcomed in Bollywood. P.susheela and S.Janaki are far superior than Lata and Asha bhosle..But NI's get more recognition than their worth. Lata Mangeshkar who showed Vani Jayaram the door to exit has Bharat Ratna to her credit. Pitiable state.

And as you say every singer is unique. But has P.susheela or S.Janaki or SPB or TMS or KJY got Bharatratna ?

There are too ways of looking at things..

1. IR, just as his music is on a different plane.

2. As a tamil film music lover. what is that I want ? simple I want to him to compose music. Your concern is, about his ego(?) coming in way of his career. But imagine, had he been welcomed to compose in Bollywood in the 80s, I and you would have been loosers of 100s of wonderfull songs.. you are talking about IR not getting recognition. But I am happy that, ultimately we are the beneficiaries. It’s a blessing in disguise. SPB once remarked in a TV show “IR does not go behind fame, he is happy with what has come his way “...IR himself is happy composing maximum for Tamil movies. You say that he does’nt compose as much as he did before.Ironically, the output of other MD’s in the last 10 years has contrastingly glorified IR’s Music than before, much more than when he was on the top. Only when people listen to the “products “ of other MDs , can they distinctly see IR’s genius. I guess,IR fans have evolved to Hardcore IR fans and fanatics only in the past decade. My humble opinion is that Tamil film Industry does not deserve him anymore and hence I would love to hear Non-filmy albums from his studios..where he can experiment to his hearts content…

Thank you very much Nitu Krishnan for the excellent and prefect write up!

One of the India's strengths is IlaiyaRaaja. Even IITs or IISc or Medical Advancements or Commercial Music are dependent on Developed Countries. Almost all other fields are depending on other countries like US, etc.,

At present only IlaiyaRaaja's music stands above all.

Ilayaraaja is the music king of Indian film music. Nobody can take it away from him. The so called composers and the oscar winners are yet to create songs that are etched in memory like Raaja. K Balachander the sinister director and Bharathiraja are nowhere now after having cunningly dethroned Raaja. Same is the story for Mani Ratnam. All these directors movies without Ilayraaja have suffered big time.

World Record!
by Ratan on Sep 21, 2010 07:28 PM  | Hide replies

Looks like this maestro has the world record, having scored the music for over 900 films in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Hindi, Malayalam... even in Bengali and Oriya! Wow! It's a pity that he's still referred to as a South Indian composer.

I have listened to his songs from the 70's and 80's which were in a completely different league and way way ahead of its times. What's so unique about Ilayaraja is that he is a 'complete' composer. Amazing tunes, splendid orchestration and resonating, high-impact background scores. I was introduced to his music while studying in BITS Pilani in the late 80's. My journey started with his instrumental albums, 'Nothing but Wind' and 'How to Name It'? and boy, I was hooked. It's when I realized it's the same music direcyor who composed for Hindi classics like Sadma!

Many Hindi composers have made a living out of copying his hits (Anand Milind (dozens of films), Anu Malik (notably Virasat). Some even shamelessly used his background scores.

It's time this man, who was the 1st Asian to compose a symphony got due recognition from all quarters. He's a pride of India, not just of the South!

Ratan, Nice to see your comment. He is pride of India. What to do he has less number of hindi films to his credit. Thats the reason media is calling him south indian music director. The tunes composed by him is beyond all these directions.

Sorry to say - Bollywood music sucks. It might be superior in technical aspects, budget, marketing and such things. But when it comes to music, south indians have a much better taste and appreciate people with talents better than their north indian counterparts. FYI, still in the south, A R Rahman comes only next to Illaiyaraja.

And the comments on Rahman is your personal opinion only. If we are hearing hindi songs it is only bcoz of Rahman (or only of Rahman's).
