he must be 40 something...his wife gayatri, and him not getting along well...marry in haste, repent later :)
His strength is screen play. His screen play would be tightly held and will not touch any unncessary subjects.
Other strengths are using his entire technocrat team without compromising. This includes Music, Photography, editing, re-recording, Art Direction, Choreography, Stunt, etc.
Infact Mouna Ragam was such a simple story but presented in a beautiful form due its screen play. Nayagan stands tall in every faculty. Nayagan & Anjali's set was so good that no one would believe it so. Thalapathy was one of his few movies where Rajnikanth showed that he too possess acting talent. Chaiya Chaiya picturisation was amazing. The Camera moves along with the train which moves along with the song in a perfect harmony.
Music: He utilised Illayaraja well in every one of his movie - Nayagan, Anjali, Pagal Nilavu, Mouna Ragam, Geetanjali (Telugu), Thalapathy, Agni Nakshatram.... All these songs are still heard by people with such awe. 'Rakkamma Kaiya Thattu' song from Thalapathy was considered as best song of the year by BBC's listeners.
Again AR Rahman gave his best in all his movies of Mani Ratnam starting from Roja.

One of the main reasons why people see Mani's films more than once is that they neither understand the dialogue nor understand the screenplay set in dark surroundings!!

batal bhairavi was supposed to be remade... Vittalachariya wanted a male who could resemble a demon. Let us suggest Hari... Iam sure a demon will look more handsome than him

Hari, we iam not jealous of u. If the epic ravana is recreated as a movie, Who else can do the role of Hanuman... u alone can be a perfect match.

Does subash ghai and ratnam started taking movies like Devar films and RamaNarayanan?
Kamalhasan, in Nayakan, is one of the Indian film which bears testimony to the fact that in INdia too..we have director/actors at par with Hollywood talent!.
Nayakan, was a really cinematic treat..thanks to Mani, Ratnam's effort and a power-house performance by Kamalhassan,
It was Mouna Ragam that bought fame to Karthik, even before Agni Nakshathiram came. It was a flambouyant performance from him in that movie - very different from a typical hero character.
Because of Maniratnam, I saw the first traces of acting in Abhishek in Yuva. That is a much bigger achievement of Maniratnam than making Kamal Hasan act better.
undobtedly naygan cannot be matched with any movie or any actor of kamal's calibre. due credit shud be given to mani as well. one of the most watchable movies on any day & any no. of times. hats off to all involved in this terrific materpiece in Indian cinema. Velu Nakan is one character which i will cherish all my life

unlike all other movie u wont find tranformation in actory. there are several phases in this character & to play this character during those days were extraordinary & top of the world. even today when i hear the song thenpadi during dying moments, i get goose bumps & tear in my eyes.
