not a word about mohan's brilliant portrayal of a silent man with a golden heart! revathy was good but the movie is worth remembering because of mohan's understated performance.
1997... mohanlal (iruvar) missed national award to kamalhaasan (indian).. just like wen he missed in 2006, he (thanmatra) lost to amitabh bachhan (black)... it's difficult to say which was better.. many might have different views.. but for me.. one of his biggest fans.. he lost to worthy opponents.. n worthy performances..
secondly... it would have been good if they mentioned the little girl in kannathil muthamittal.. she was outstanding.. abhishek in guru n madhavan in its tamil version...
PS: when the national awards hurt me the most was in 2005... Saif ali khan for HUMTUM!!! :( :( :( .. i mean .. he was outstanding in omkara... but humtum?? really.. there was shah rukh's swades.. mammootty's kazhcha... surya's perazhagan... vishnuvardhan's apthamitra... saif ali khan wasn't even nominated for filmfare that year!!! i really think it must have somthing to do with his MOTHER being the head of the award committee.. that one REALLY hurt when there were so many worthy winners...
n lastly.. if anyone intends to have comments.. please keep it logical n critical.. no south - north bashing... please..

it's a high time now tamil films get a global exposures.bala, vasantha balan, and experienced mani sir, priyadarsan talents have to be recognised.i think north indians not treat south indians equally

Is it not right to give a break for an upcoming musician like Rahman?. Actually Mani was taking a big risk by leaving a popular music director like Ilayaraja.

u must be kidding, AR rahman has miles to go b4 he can even think of coming close to illayaraja. I dont know what is so good abt "jai ho".

with all due respect to illayaraja ar rahaman has already achieved a lot..he has 2 oscars under his belt and he is more internationally recognised than illayaraja...coming to jai ho, it may not be his best, but defn better than the the other nominations at tht time...

There is nothing good abt Jai Ho. ARR has done better songs himself, let alone Ilayaraja. Rumour has it that Jai Ho was actually made for a Salman movie named Yuvraj or smthin, but the makers chose not to go for it. Jai Ho would not have been noticed, had it not for Slumdog millionare.
PS: I feel the Pussycat dolls version of Jai Ho is much better than the original.

In an interview AR Rahman humbly said about Ilayaraja "I may be a tiger but a lion is a lion"
We cant forget Maneesha Koirala in Bombay which made her one of most wanted actresses in b-town.. And the child actress in film 'Kannathil Muthamittal'. I dont know her name.. But she delivered great perfomance at this young age.. Abhishek and Rajini Kanth showed their talent first time in mani's moovies.. And Shahruk was not much irritating in 'Dilse' as compared to his other movies.. Mani is unbetable..We are really proud of him..

You are spot on! I was blown away by Rajni's performances in his early day's films.

this guy would have noticed for the first time ;)
Pls do not keep RAJNI and small AB in one level dude. RAJNI is a great actor, go watch his movies between 1975 and 1985. Very few will attempt what he did in early career.

good reply. Rajni's thalapathy performance is a epic too. "Thodra pakkalaan thodra pakalaan" mani did do something different with Thalaivar.

rajini is an average actor..its the dirty inferiority complex of tamilians made him superstar. He just showed a below average person work outs which only happens in somebodies dream - throwing enemies like apples, cutting bullets with blade, romancing with fare-gud looking-young gals and many many non-senses , unbelievable stuff.. There s no reality in his films or acting..Movies like Chandramukhi and Sivaji were of gud story base but spoiled in presentation..Only ur audience will love it. if you guys r so much fond of unrealistic-nonsenses; watch cartoons like waltdisney, tom n jerry, shrek etc..u will get more fun.. We respect realistic performers like Kamal hasan, Vikram, Surya, Arjun, madhavan etc.. This generation lives on earth not on sky.. (and i know one thing - climax of Dhalapathy was changed because panic tamil audience couldn't bare death of Rajini's charactor which was original in story.. and u made film maker substitue with Mammootty's death!!! pitty on u guys:-)

can u name that rajini movie where he cuts bullet with knife ?? these are all mithun's cartoon stunts in ur bollywood crap .. arjun, madhavan are all realistic actors ?? hahaha..why didnt u add sundar.c,t.rajender in ur list of realistic actor ??
chandramukhi and sivaji ran for more than 100 days even in malaysia and japan too.. millions liked that movie, if u think ur the intelligent creature in this world and telling those millions as fools ?? then go check with ur mental doctor. thalapathy is made tamil and malayalam.. climax is changed as per the states. in malayalam rajini dies and in tamil mamooty dies.. so wat are u going to tell about mallus now ?? and u think malayalam version is original ..haha pity on u .. first see the original movie .
some morons think they r very intelligent .. rajini is a great actor.. its not necessary to prove those morons that he is a great actor. keep think ur intelligent and watch that realistic star arjun and madhavan movies ..

Absolutely right. Rajini was awesome in Thillu Millu. Have not seen other movies u mentioned above besides bits of 16 vayathinile.
Thanks Rediff for this wonderful article... To me i am always confused who was better kamal in nayagan or Mohanlal in Iruvar..Both were amazing.... Another was revati in mounaragam where she did that character perfectly.
When Kamal Haasan was brilliant in Nayakan, Mohanlal was just outstanding in Iruvar. It was only because of dirty politics that he never won the national award on that year. Maniratnam still feels sad that Lal never won the coveted award.
Re: THE BEST - KAMAL / LAL
by Rahul Balan on Jun 15, 2010 11:36 AM
actually Kamal's inclusion mite b justified since 95% consider Nayakan as his best performance...But Mohanlal's best in Iruvar?....I believe there are at least 3-4 movies ahead of Iruvar...I preferred Abhishek Bachchan in Guru or Yuva in this list since only these two films shown some signs of promise!!!

though the story was mature, the performances apart from laxmi were aweful. the movie survived only bcoz of music thnx to illayaraja.
