I heard awara, hoon, sung by many 50-plus years old taxi drivers to impress me knowing that I am an Indian when I travel by their taxis...(chinese taxi means Elantra,Zeta,Accord and these drivers are owners of the cars)...this tune was even converted to a chinese song...
I was shell-shocked to hear a chinese old man playing a violin type traditional instrument and singing the entire song..awara,hoon,...gardish,ka,tara,hoon..in the bank of the river which separates North Korea from China..tear drops rolled down from my ears with nationalistic passion..that was the impact of Raj Kapoor..I salute him to make me feel proud as an Indian and winning the hearts of millions barefeet of language or religion or location...

My father did not know how to use a lap top..
My Grand father did not see computer...
My great grand father did not see an aeroplane..
That does not mean they were idiot or nonsense...
We should know to respect our heritage, tradition and culture...
Today we see a Ranbir Kapoor or a Kajol in bollywood because of the foundation made by the previous generation...
Only one mera, naam, joker itslef had made indian cinema famous through out Russia,China and East European countries..those days there were no 100 number of channels or media hype/facilities,it was the content of a movie and soulful acting which touched the hearts of millions irrespective of country or location...
Greatest thing is Raj Kapoor produced, directed and acted,he single handedly created magic of celluloid in so many good movies.Raj Kapoor will remain one of the greatest showmen of bollywood for ever..I salute to him !

India is lagging behind because of the people like you. Over emotional and never accept reality. Grow up!!
To be honest RK was a characterle$$ person and a true irritating actor. If you still dont want to believe then bring his movie and watch them. You will not accept the truth but you will realise it.
Your Grand Father did not see Computer coz that time it was not invented, you idiot!! So as your Great Grand father.

Mr. Khan , I agree ur khan and not a terrorist(Pun Intended) though your knowledge of India cinema is shameful and more disgustful is your attempt to write on it. Article was on Raj Kapoor as a showman not just an actor......read the article again and understand what its all about... as far your views are concerened they are as good as your upbringing...Madrasa's can teach u only Farsi not Cinema... so restrict ur self to ur religious topics....

Satyajit Rai has caught the imagination of a selected category of audience thru his great movies... However Raj Kapoor pierced the hearts of millions of common movie-goer through out India,Russia,East Europe or China..even today an old chinese hums the tune awara, hoon, awara, hoon, when he meets an Indian..that was the impact..this tune has even been made to a chinese song..

Please do not call Satyajit Ray a Showman. Satyajit Ray's films were totally meant for a different audience. For mass and Russia/China Raj Kapoor was/is/will be a legend. While for the class and Western countries Satyajit Ray was/is/will be a legend.
Its true that its one of his good movies but its a disaster at the box office. I dont know why people just write anything without knowing facts. I think this is the reason why people dont value rediff....pity
Re: pls write north indian greatest showman
by om shanti on Jun 04, 2010 08:00 AM
Our India will keep on fighting like this when people of Europe,Russia and China admire Raj Kapoor with great respect as an Indian showman..they donot know north south factors..proud to be an Indian..
What a hasty compilation of some pertinent facts. Rediff should have come out with a complete tribute to the great show man. Earlier writers like Dinesh Raheja should have been roped in. The editorial standards are horrible. There is so much this generation does not know about Raj Kapoor - they could have pieced a wonderful story with yester year pictures & anecdotes. What a pity.

yes, this is a hastily written article, guess they suddenly realised its RK's death anniversary, and they need to put in something. Govid Nihalanai and Shyam Bengal certainly don't belong to RK's school of entertaining movies.

song Mera jhootha hai japani.... here in New york. He lives in Brooklyn where most of the immigrant Russians live, it seems almost every other house has RK's old movie DVD's which they keep watching again and again. This speaks volumes as to how RK's art was able to transcend geographical boundary, culture and language barrier.
The article went fine all anlong but stumbled at the lst line. why we are not able to praise one without belittling others? The terms best, greatest etc. are really funny!
