RK was undoubtedly the greatest ever showman this country has ever produced..He went international with AWARA when no ever dreamt of getting international fame..when media not so active..he shot SANGAM extensively in Europe when nobody thought about shooting abroad...he was even greater than THE GREAT Dilip Kumar...a true genius and an expert in almost every aspect of filmaking and acting
Please check your facts rediff...The Dadasahed phalke award function happened on either May 1 OR 2 OR 3, 1988 and not on June 3, 1988 as written by you.. exactly after a month on June 2, 1988 9.30 pm India time RK died after being in coma for exactly a month from date of collapse in the award function

i have told that he died in June 1988....pls see my comments properly..the award function was held in MAY 1988 which is wrongly mentioned by redifff...i am right 100%
I think the following stars (in the order of impact and business) are far greater showmen/ entertainer than RK. So instead of superlatives one might restrict to saying RK was a "great" entertainer:

You do not seem knowledgeable enough about the previous generations and are biased towards the current generation. You only included Dilip Kumar and left out Dev Anand, Raj Kapoor, Dharamendra, Kishore Kumar, Hrishikesh Mukherjee. Even Rajesh Khanna, Rajendra Kumar, Shammi Kapoor, Rishi Kapoor and Jeetendra would be better showmen than several in your list like Salman, Subhash Ghai and Rakesh Roshan

I think we have to think about SUSTAINED showmanship. With respect to that I think I missed out Kishore Kumar and Dev Anand. Rajesh Khanna's success was short lived and killed by the angry young man era. Dharmendra and Jeetendra always remained way way behind Amitabh. In fact Jeetendra once said from 1 to 9 there is AB and then we are all at number 10. Once past 50, Shammi Kapoor went into non-lead, non-flambouyant and insignificant roles unlike Raj Kapoor or Dilip Kumar. Same for the Jubilee Star Rajendra Kumar. Rishi Kapoor had a very bubbly youthful image and he never drove a huge fan-following. Hrishikesh Mukherjee was far more classy to be called a flashy entertainer. Any day his Anand, Musafir, Satyakam, Mili are far more SENSIBLE movies than a Bobby or a Sangam or a Dharam Karam. Shashi Kapoor and Shatrughan Sinha had their entertainment quotient too but short-lived. Aparna Sen once compared Shashi Kapoor to Clint Eastwood of East in terms of glamour. So its not true that I am knowledgeable of the bygone era. I just placed my voting rights without knowing that some "buzoorg" like you would get fiery at that. :)

Bachacha - I am not fiery - just despise your flawed understanding. People will laugh when you tell them that you consider Salman Khan, Subhash Ghai, Rakesh Roshan, Aamir Khan as greater showmen than Raj Kapoor.
If fact as far as showman is concerned, even Dilip Kumar, though a great actor was not as big a showman as RK.

I beg to differ with regards to Subhash Ghai whose grand presentations in films does not exactly reflect the soul of the movie. His movies were entertainers alright but with repetitive flaws !!
