Manna Da had unknowingly set the bar of perfectness so high for the bangla semi-classical songs that the next gen did not even attempt to reach it and so wandered off to other styles of music incl. western and rock and jaz like Indian songs.
His bangla songs are the best songs in the world. Some of them are so out of this world. I hear them every day. With or without award he will remain a Pride of country for next 100yrs.
Nobody doubts the suitability of Manna Dey for this award, but I wonder how they decide it is time to honour someone like him. I mean, he could have been given this award 20 years back also. Manna Dey has to be admired for maintaining his quality and his place despite other talented singers to compete against. He was never the no. 1 choice of any music director, but he was never without work. An humble and down to earth man to the core, he was never involved in any rift or controversy. A Great Man.
Since the news came out in the morning newspaper, I am seeing individuals as well as media trying to glorify Manna Dey by comparing him with names like Kishore, Rafi, Mukesh, Yesudas, SP et al. These articles are trying to claim how superior a singer he is compared to the others. Is it really necessary? Is the world of music in so much need of competition to bring the best out of singers? Why is it at all needed to even think that Manna De could have done more justice to a "ZINDEGI KA SAFAR" or a Rafi could have done more justice to "LAAGA CHUNARI MEIn DAAG" or a Kishore could have done more justice to a "CHAUDHAVI KA CHAAND". Don't you think that when some of these great songs stir the soul of a huge population, then its so much unnecessary to think someone else could have done better? If Kishore is not formally trained in music and even then can render such soulful numbers, shouldn't we feel optimistic. When a classical-based singer like Manna De renders a "Aao Twist Kare", shouldn't we be proud of him. When a Rafi renders a peppy number like "Main Kalen Hai To" ... isn't that enough to say that HE WAS THE GREATEST FOR THAT SONG. Why do we have to bring in a rat race into music and try to prove someone is GREATEST across all songs? These debates show that some of us UNDERSTAND music so well ... yet in the process have lost their heart to FEEL the music because their ego-full fanship has made them blind.

Every singer has which I've mentioned has his own quality. When you say I never heard Mann Day it is ignorance. You may hero worshipping him. As far as my listening of music is concerned I enjoy different kinds of music & singers all around the world unlike you. What I am asking is there are singers who has sung more than 30000 songs in various languages& won 6 or more National Awards like K.J.Jesudas & S.P.Balasubramanium. They have not given this award. That's why I am asking what's the criteria of giving this award.

By all means the Great Manna Dey deserves this award. He sang various songs from classical to comical with ease and gained evergreen popularity. But there were singers like Kishore, Rafi who did all that with evergreen popularity as well . To berate some one with giving % is purely solely your opinion. Don't you enjoy Sachin & Gavaskar both? We should feel blessed that we could enjoy such a range of immortal singers like Manna Dey Rafi Kishore Lata Asha etc. Please leave the bickering and choose their songs according to our mood/ ambience. One more thing it requires equal amount of art / talent to be classical singer as well as popular singer as mentioned above with timeless appeal.
Manna Dey is great. I heard his concert. It was supposed to be from 8 PM to 10 PM. The audience just did not let him leave the stage. At 1 AM most reluctantly allowed him to leave the stage. But his voice remained with us for several days. I think he is just too much.
